LAGRANGE COLLEGE - 1831

LaGrange College is rich in history. From its
beginning in 1831 to the present, the college
has endured man/ trials both within the school
itself and in the community surrounding it.
This institution was born before the Statue
of Liberty was dedicated, before the United
States adopted standard time, and before
electrical lighting was invented. An idea began
in the 1820s to start a school of higher
learning for women to attend. This concept
was unheard of at this time in history. After
much persuasion, permission was finally
granted and in 1831 the LaGrange Female
Academy was established. This school began
in an old building which can still be seen near
the campus. The campus is now located on
what we call the "Hill", the highest point in
LaGrange. In 1847, the school was renamed
the LaGrange Female Institute. It did not
become a college until 1851 changing to the
LaGrange Female College. It was not until
1934 when we finally became LaGrange
College. In the early 1900s women were
receiving diplomas in areas such as voice,
home economics, piano, and expression.
Now we have Bachelor's and Master's degrees
in numerous fields from nursing to art.
Through the years, the college has seen
friends and loved ones fight in many wars.
Some of these include the Spanish American
War, both World Wars, Vietnam, and now
the War on Terrorism. In 1953, the college
officially became coeducational allowing men
to graduate. We became integrated in the
late 1960s. Looking back through history,
LaGrange College has seen it all. We have
survived everything from financial hardships
to fires, and this college will continue to
thrive and to provide students from all over
the world with a quality education and a life
altering college experience for years to come.

Dedication

In recognition of your interest in the development of

all areas of student life.
And in appreciation for your many years of teaching

and counseling.
We lovingly dedicate the 2005-2006 Quadrangle to you.

~Dr. Linda Buchanan ~

The best and beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or
even touched -they must be felt with the heart.

Dean B feels with her heart and that makes her such a
beautiful person inside and out and that's why we all love her.

Dr. Linda Buchanan became a new addition to the
LaGrange College community in the spring of 1997. She
accepted the position of Vice President & Dean of Student
Life and Retention. Her accomplishments include: the rank
of Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserve, columnist
with the LaGrange Writers Group, and she served dutifully

in Molesworth, England for three months as a naval
intelligence officer during the recent war with Iraq. Finally
she has a attended a remarkable twenty-seven commencement

ceremonies.

Our Mission:
LC Buddies is committed to making
a positive impact in a child's life
through dailey interaction in the
school. Our goal is to show
compassion and concern, with the
hope of encouraging and inspiring
the child in a way he or she will
never forget. Therefore, he or she
will continue the cycle of having a
positive role model in the future
through mentorship to other children
around the LaGrange community.

G BUS VKZOJCGT

The Bus Project is an after school
program that reaches out to
underprivileged children in the
community. We have a school bus that
has been transformed into a mini
classroom, complete with desk,
computers, and cabinets. Grant Miller,
the director of the Bus Project, and
several student volunteers go out to
the Live Oak Community park once a
week and meet all of the kids living in
the area.

"The kids come out and we help them
with their homework, play games, do
arts and crafts, and have a snack. The

kids really enjoy it, and it is a great
way for college students to reach out

and make a difference in kids lives."

The Religious Experience

LaGrange College recogizes that the
college experience is the turning point
in its student's lives, and members of
the college community do their best to
be sure that students grow spiritually as
well as mentally. LaGrange is called
through the United Methodist Church,
but it recognizes the wide range of
religious beliefs that are prevalent on
campus. Religious life provides
fellowship, service, and learning, and it
is a large part of the college experience
on campus.

Phi Beta Sigma

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is a product of three
insightful minds. The distinguished gentlemen that con-
ceived Phi Beta Sigma comprise of the Honorable A.
Langston Taylor, the Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and the
Honorable Charles I. Brown. Phi Beta Sigma was founded
on January 9, 1914 and brought about an organization in
which the motto is, "Culture for Service, and Service for
Humanity". This motto holds true because the honorable
founders believed that they should give back to the commu-
nities in which they were raised. Along with our fraternity's
motto, our three principles: Brotherhood, Scholarship, and
Service, state our reason for existence.

Our vision is to utilize the skills and
talent that God has given each of our mem-
bers to bring about change on and off our
college campus. We are determined to hold
events and service projects that will make a
difference!

The vision and purpose of
Phi Beta Sigma was brought to
LaGrange College on May 1 8,
2003. Our fraternity members
at LaGrange College are
constantly serving proactively,
reaffirming and maintaining a
strong commitment to
Brotherhood, Scholarship,
and Service. Since our
founding at LaGrange, we have
been very active on and off the
college campus; we have
participated in the following:

Can food drives

Toy Drives (for
critically injured children at

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913
by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. These
young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote
academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need.
The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their partici-
pation in the Women's Stiff rage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. Delta
Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930.

The Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

THE B EG INNING OF T AU PHI
On April 26, 2005, Seven visionary and dynamic collegiate young ladies brought
the ideals of Delta to LaGrarrge College. We salute these charter members:

Their leadership and dedication made Tau Phi the 973rd chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc. Tau Phi is committed to upholding high morality, sisterhood,
and scholarship that our illustrious founders envisioned. To our advisors, Monica
Askew, Gwendolyn Mcintosh, and Yvonnia Robertson, we applaud you for your

^ Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that
7 *sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the r t eal
mission for progressive organizations - to address societal
mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day.
Founded January 16, 19,20, Zeta began as an idea conceived
by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Ari-
zona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and
Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pe'arls,
dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women
and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the*
precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer
Womanhood.

Mlpha Kappa Alpha

In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America's first Greek-letter organization established by Black
college women. Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington D.C., where the idea for formation
was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri.

In a world in which materialism is persuasive, and technology and competition have decreased the need for
collaboration and cooperation, it is critical to have an association that cuts across racial, international,
physical, and social barriers to help individuals and communities develop and maintain constructive
relationships with others. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is that vital organization.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sisterhood composed of women who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a
means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service. Alpha Kappa cultivates and encourages high scholastic
and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; alleviates problems concerning
girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and serves all mankind through a nucleus
of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa

2005: In Review

Hurricane Katrina - On August 29, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New
Orleans, LA, becoming the cause of the largest natural devastation to ever hit
America. Katrina formed over the Bahamas, crossed into Florida as a Category
1 storm, but strengthened rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico. When it hit landfall
next, as a Category 3 storm, the storm surge caused damage along the
coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Levees between Lake
Pontchartrain and New Orleans were breached, flooding almost 80% of New
Orleans. Katrina is both the costliest hurricane in US history (at $75 Billion),
as well as the deadliest (with an estimated 1,500 victims).

LIVE 8 - Live 8 went down in July in the G8 countries and South Africa. The
concerts, organized by Bob Geldof, the mind behind the LiveAID benefit
celebrating its 20th Anniversary, were host to an amazing array of artists from
all over the world, including: Pink Floyd (playing together for the first time since
1981), Bryan Adams, Good Charlotte, Paul McCartney, U2, Coldplay, Elton John,
R.E.M., Snoop Dogg, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Robbie Williams, The Who, Black
Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, Kanye West, Destiny's Child, Toby Keith, DMB, Alicia Keys,
Jars of Clay, Stevie Wonder, plus many, many more. More important than the
concerts was the message: "Make Poverty History". The hard work was worth
it, as the G8 Summit voted to double the aid to Africa from $25billion to $50billion
by 2010.

Terror in Britain - It was a normal, busy day in London on July 7. That all
changed around 8:49, when reports of an explosion made its way to authorities.
Within the next 30 minutes, two train stations had explosion reports, with the
rest of the cities train stations evacuating. By 10:00 the National Grid, which
supplies power to the underground railways, said that nothing had occurred
with their system. Ten minutes later officials began reporting that there had
been an explosive device attached to the first train to explode. Just a few
minutes later a report of a bus exploding were announced. By 1:00 that
afternoon, authorities were estimating 150 people dead

FACEBOOK Takes Over LaGrange!

In September a phenomenon struck LaGrange College in the form of a little internet site
called Facebook. Like Xanga and MySpace, Facebook is a community for college students
to connect, make friends, and, basically, show off how popular you are (or not). Over 500
LaGrange College students have become members of Facebook, making the website one
of the most popular forms of procrastination. From Photo Galleries to Groups (like "Private
School Survivors"), Facebook has provided an outlet of time-wasting other than runs to
Taco Bell or Wal-Mart. Ok, maybe not.

To all who have helped bring this vision of this yearbook to this point I
thank you all! To my right hand, Sandra I thank you for all your extreme
hardwork, strength, and insight. I also thank the 2005-2006 Yearbook
Staff for all their hardwork and dedication for such a vision could not
have been completed by just myself or Sandra alone. I have a new vision
for 2006-2007 yearbook to be better & bigger than this year. Until next
year I wish you all best wishes on finals and enjoy your summer and I'll
see you next year again as your co - editor.

God Bless & lLuv,
Terrica S. Ellis

Wow. What an amazing roller coaster of a ride this past year and a half
has been. I have learned so many things that are irreplaceable. There have
been times I was so overwhelmed that I truly wanted to quit. But it was
the constant support and encouragement form my roommates, friends
and the staff, faculty, and students here that kept me going. Doing this
yearbook, stepping out on this shaky limb was one of the best decisions
I ever made. It has been so much fun, but even more than that it has
taught me so much. As editor I have had to step out, way out, of my
comfort zone. I know I am a better person because of this experience.
And while there have many ups and many more downs through the
last months, I am so glad we did it. Thank you to Carolyn for all your
help- I do not know how I would have done it without you! And to the
others who are to many to name here- Thanks! Terrica, we did it! I hope
we have given LC a wonderful yearbook. And as I am here for another
year, I hope next year's is even better now that we know more of what
the hec we are doing!

See you next year!

A daughter is a precious gift,
A blessing from above.
She's laughter, warmth, and feminine
charm;

She's thoughtfulness and love.

A daughter bring a special joy
That comes from deep inside.
And as she grows to womanhood
She fills your heart with pride.

The love she gives so freely
Is a rare and beautiful gift.
She brings the sunshine right indoors
And gives your heart a lift.
With every busy, happy year
She's dearer than ever before,
Through every stage... through every age,
You love her more and more.

Build me a son, O Lord, who wall be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself
when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble, and gentle in victory. Build
me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee- and that to know himself is the
foundation stone of knowledge. Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur
of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those
who fail. Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before
he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past. And after all these
things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself
seriously. Give him humility so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of
true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength. Then , I, his father, will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain."

For our wonderful daughter, Nicole

You are a treasure and blessing given to us from above. You
are our laughter, warmth, and tenderness. Our hearts are filled
with love and pride. It doesn't seem so long ago that you were
a little girl, still happily playing, wearing ponytails and ribbons.
It seems only yesterday we were bending to kiss you good
night and wishing you sweet dreams.

You are blessed with a loving heart, gentle spirit, strong
determination, contentment, friendship, laughter and the love
of your family. Remember your dreams and go for them.
Believe in yourself.

The wish we make for you today is that some small measure
of the love, joy, and pride you have brought to our lives, will
be returned to you as you begin your journey. May your life
path be filled with all the love and happiness one heart can
hold.

We are very proud of you, no words can describe the
cherished memories and love that come from having a daughter
such as you.

You fill our hearts- We love you so much!
