LAGRANGE COLLEGE
LAGRANGE, GEORGIA

Opening 1

ds the saying goes, "time waits for no man/' but what
happens to those that are left in the wake of change?
Does the change to the new bring the death of the old?
Must the past be destroyed to clear a space for the
future? Does the current of time wash away everything
in its wake?

t

o destroy the past
is to say that what
one has done had
no meaning and no
purpose. There is
meaning in every-
thing, no matter
how trivial it seems
at the time, when
viewed from the
standpoint of
experience.

the traditions of the past serve as building blocks
for the traditions which everyone creates now.
Without these strong building blocks to support
us, the buildings one makes in life will crumble.

\ great and good man has been taken from among us, and

t is fitting that we as a community pay tribute to him and thank God that for
Dver eight decades he lived and labored for good among us. Fuller E. Callaway,
r.(1 907-1 992) has left a legacy which blesses us at every turn and an example
which challanges us all to try to stand in the breach and use the talents,
esources, and opportunities which God has entrusted to us to continue to
)uild a better community, state, nation, and, indeed, a better world.

: uller E. Callaway, Jr., with his extremely bright mind and farsighted vision, for
nany years applied himself to develop further the high quality textile industry
tarted here in LaGrange by his father. That industry gave thousands of persons
>ood jobs and economic security and made LaGrange a vibrant, growing
lommunity. But more, this great industrial leader was a man of great heart,
i humanitarian with great concerns, and a philanthropist of great deeds. He
Kovided resources which built better schools, better churches, better medical
acilities and offered scholarships for many of our citizens. Through his
)hilanthropy, the city and county have been able to serve their citizens more
Effectively in a hundred ways: through beautiful parks, recreational and
cultural opportunities and facilities for the conservation of our community's
listory.

magine this city without the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum, with just
nediocre schools, and without the superbly equipped West Georgia Medical
lenter. Imagine LaGrange without the College with its facilities for science
ducation, its library, classroom buildings, its chapel, its art building and
nuseum, its theatre, its student center, and its other beautifully restored
>uildings. Imagine LaGrange without its touches of attractive landscaping, its
tately churches, its pluses in county and city services in scores of ways, its
>eople's great pride in our city. His influence for good upon our citizens
'Xtends far beyond our city limits to college campuses, hospitals, and other
nstitutions throughout the South.

He had an uncanny ability to take the long view of things and to respond to
he changing needs of his industry and his community. Upon his retirement,
he Foundation he created provided land for attracting high quality industries

LaGrange. The Foundation continues his legacy of generosity and commit-
nent . The recent magnificent gift to LaGrange College of the Callaway
auditorium, the activities building, the swimming pool and Calla-Cabana, six
ennis courts, two Softball fields and some adjacent properties is a testament

Mr. Callaway's largess.

Vhy would such a successful industrialist turn his attention and resources to
uch enormous philanthropy? He had a heart which was constrained early in
fe to obey the great commandment to love God with all of one's heart, soul
nd mind, andto love one's neighbor as oneself. Thisvision was instilled upon
lim by his Baptist minister grandfather and his parents, Fuller E. Callaway and
da Cason Callaway. Fuller E. Callaway, Jr. and his gracious wife, Alice Hand
Callaway, together, as equal partners, followed this vision and expressed it in
lew and effective ways that have benefitted us at every turn.

po not think good things just happen; nor should we with ingratitude take
hem for granted. All of these benefits which we enjoy have flowed directly
rom Mr. Callaway's firm intent and insistence. He has provided the resources
:>ut he has also given the vision, and set the directions and dimensions of his
pod works. The benefits we enjoy have flowed from his mind, his vision, the
alues he cherished, and his great, divinely inspired humanity.

Walter Y. Murphy, President of LaGrange College

Renovation

Building traditions took on physical forms this year
with the renovation and modernization of the
campus. After months of labor Hawkes was re-
opened and serves as a women's residence hall on
the second, third and fourth floors and houses the
Education Department on the first floor. Other
buildings were given face-lifts with new paint jobs,
landscape work and installation offiresafety systems.

NSTALLATION

This year brought LaGrange College into the
Information Age with the installation of a cam-
pus wide computer network. The entire col-
lege community can now access a variety of
computer programs and services including
WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, Mathmatica, the
library catalog, the cafeteria menu, and lists of
campus boxes and phone numbers. Terminals
are available in dormitory rooms, the Writing
Center, and the computer lab. In addition the
network will be eventually expanded to reach
every building on campus. Banks library also
went on-line with a completely computerized
version of the card catalog and a computerized
system for checking out books.

1 44 International Week

1

The richness and diversity that international
students contribute to our campus community
was celebrated during LaCrange College's an-
nual International Week, held this year Febru-
ary 1 7 through February 23. A variety of events
recognized the significant contributions of the
over 60 students representing 12 different
countries from around the world . Students
from nations ranging from the Bahamas to
Zimbabwe shared their cultures in exhibits, a
fashion show, a food fair and International
Olympic games.

OMM UNITY

CELEBRATION

LaCrange College reaffirmed the spirit of community during its second
annual Celebration of Community held April 29 through May 2, 1 992.
Faculty, administration, staff, and students joined together to strengthen
relationships and to heighten academic interest. As part of the
celebration, both students and faculty were honored for their contribu-
tions to the college. In addition, an outdoor banquet was held to foster
community spirit and a workshop on improving communications
within the College community was held.

ONTACT

Beginning this year LaGrange College
instituted a newtradition. Cultural pro-
grams, called Contact, were designed
to unify our diverse college community
and to advance cultural knowledge.
Each week on Wednesday 1 1 :00 classes
were not scheduled so that the pro-
grams, appealing to every interest
imaginable, might be more broadly
seen. Some of the Contact programs
presented were storytelling, music
concerts, dance performances and po-
etry readings by famous writers. Con-
tact also offered up human interest
presentations on topics such as date
rape, AIDS awareness and alcohol
abuse.

Former Soviet Union

Around the world old traditions
were shattered and new tradi-
tions were formed. The dawn of
the decade saw the collapse of
the Soviet Union when its former
President, Mikhail Gorbachev,
set into action a series of demo-
cratic reforms that would result
in the elimination of his job. For
some, the changes were unwel-
come though, and an unsuc-
cessful coup of conservative
leaders only sped up the disin-
tegration of the Soviet Union
and the creation of the Com-
monwealth of Independent
States.

1 52 World Events

Eastern Europe

With the demise of the Soviet Union, commu-
nism crumbled throughout Eastern Europe
giving rise to the emergence of democracy.
The breakdown of the authority of Yugosla-
vian PresidentTito initiated civil wars between
ethnic groups in the six republics.

World Events 153

Environmental Issues

The environment was also an issue of
great concern duringthisyear. Environ-
mentalists worldwide held protest ral-
lies to heighten public awareness of the
devastation of the Brazilian rainforest.
In Kuwait, both the people and the land
were affected by the devastation of the
Persian Gulf War. During the war,
Saddam Hussein's forces ignited hun-
dreds of oil wells, sweeping smoke and
gases as far south as the Arabian Sea.

1 54 World Events

Middle East

In the face of many conflicts and controversies
throughout the year, peace remained a major
concern. James A. Baker, III, President George
Bush's Secretary of State, played a vital role in
engineering peace initiatives in the war-torn
countries of the Middle East. As a sign of
potential peace, after nearly seven years as a
hostage in the Middle East, Terry Anderson and
all of the remaining United States hostages
were released from captivity.

World Events 155

American Controversies

In a year of new traditions, national
controversies ran rampant. Presi-
dent George Bush's nomination of
Judge Clarence Thomas to the Su-
preme Court began a firestorm of
controversy. Charges of sexual ha-
rassment were leveled against the
Justice by former co-worker Anita
Hill. The nationally televised hear-
ings that ensued had ramifications
that reverberated throughout the
workplace nationwide.

Ttb World Events

As the economy continued in
turmoil, worldwide attention
turned its focus on the an-
nouncement by Magicjohnson,
the famed basketball star, that
he was infected by the HIV virus
that causes AIDS. This an-
nouncement stunned millions
and caused many to realize that
AIDS is a disease common to all
of humanity, not just special
groups.
