2/Dedication

Exemplifying the 1987 Quadrangle's
theme, "LC the Road to Success", we pre-
sent Mrs. Julia Traylor Dyar, Director of
the Office of Institutional Relations. Her
steps on the Road to Success started off
when she was born on May 2, 1925, in
LaGrange, Georgia, to James Edward Tray-
lor and Gladys Marchman (both de-
ceased). In the year of 1943 after she had
graduated from Greensboro High School
in 1942 she became a freshman at La-
Grange College. From 1943 to 1946 Mrs.
Dyar was one of many young women
who made up the backbone of L.C. with
their charm, wisdom, and spirit. Some of
her many accomplishments while at L.C.
were: Delta Phi Delta, serving as its presi-
dent when she was a senior. She was
elected "Miss Freshman," was chosen for
OF and was freshman representative to
the Student Council, she was sophomore
representative to the Council, its secretary
as a junior and senior vice-president. She
was a member of the BSU, being program
chairman her junior year and president
her senior year. She was secretary of her
class when she was a junior. As a fresh-
man she was treasurer of the Junior Glee
Club. She was a member of the Choral
Club when she was a sophomore and of
the Chapel Choir and Concert Choir her
last two years. She was treasurer of the
Concert Choir her last two years. She was
a member of the L Club for three years
and a member of the Dance Club for two.
She was a member of the IRC, being its
secretary and treasurer her last year. As a
junior she was assistant advertising man-
ager of the QUADRANGLE. She was as-
sistant advertising manager of the Scroll as a sophomore and business
manager her last two years. She was chosen as a Superlative and elected
to "Who's Who" her senior year. After she had completed her four years
at L.C. she married in 1948 to the late Hubert L. Dyar. Her and her
husband bought a small paper and she served as associate editor and
columnist for their weekly newspaper, The Royston (Ga.) Record. For
seven years she was a correspondent for the Atlanta Constitution. Dur-
ing this period she also wrote feature stories and a Sunday column for
the Anderson (S.C.) Independent. In 1958 Mrs. Dyar became assistant
manager of Georgia Press Association, she served in this position until
February, 1972, when she was named Acting Manager. She was named
executive manager and corporate secretary in November, 1972, a posi-
tion she held until she accepted the L.C. position in 1978. She was also
the Editor, Editor's Forum, official publication, for the GPA from 1962 to
1978.

Some of her activities and memberships besides all her hard work are:
Theta Sigma Phi (now Women in Communications) Corr. Ssect. 1966;
Second Vice President, 1967; First Vice President, 1968; Member 1965-
until; Atlanta Advertising Club, 1962-78; American Society of Associ-
ation Executives, 1975-78; Georgia Society of Association Executives,
1972-78; Member, Board of Directors, Georgia Electrification Council,
1972-78; Ocfuskee Historical Society, 1973-until; Vice-President, 1980-
82; Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, 1980-until; National Trust
for Historical Preservation, 1980-until; Council for Advancement and
Support of Education, 1978-until; West Georgia Genealogical Society,
1978-until; Chattahoochee Valley Art Association, 1978-until; Member,
Georgia 4-H Advisory Committee, 1978-until; First Baptist Church, La-
Grange, Democrat: and foremost Women in Communications, 1970-
until. This is just a small example of the outstanding work this lady
does.

One of her closest co-workers and companion, Mrs. Mae Towns, was
quoted as saying "You know the phrase 'Man of all seasons'? I call her
'the Woman of all seasons' because anything you'll ask her to do, she'll
do it." She was further quoted as saying, "College Students, nieces and
nephews are her children, for she has more sympathy, empathy, compas-
sion for them while being a dedicated Christian it radiats and shows
in her life." To further commend her outstanding accomplishments, it
was established on October 30, 1986, by Allen Stewart, President of
SGA, that "For Mrs. Julia Dyar's outstanding service to the students and
staff of LaGrange College, for giving of her time and talents beyond the
call of duty, for taking the time and risks of knowing students personal-
ly, and for her genuine capacity of caring; We the students of LaGrange
College, hereby declare October 30 as Julia Dyar Appreciation Day."
Now we the QUADRANGLE Staff and the 1987 Graduating Senior Class
wish to further show our gratitude and appreciation for Mrs. Julia Dyar
by dedication of this years QUADRANGLE.

HOMECOM

With the bold theme "L.C. Is American Made" Homecoming began with rain and mishap. But LaGrange
students refused to have dampened spirits. With the simple words, "We're not going to let it rain on
our parade," President Walter Murphy set the tone of patience and perseverance.
The opening event was the parade. The rain was heavy as cars lined up. The cars were parked
tightly together. In the midst of the excitement an intoxicated driver on Vernon Street disregarded an officer and hit a
parked car causing a chain accident. Three cars were damaged and a student was injured.

As the confusion cleared, the parade proceeded to the Square and back to the campus. Bands, floats and cars were quite
a sight as traffic was interrupted in LaGrange. The first place float winner was Kappa Delta, Pi Kappa Phi was second,
and Alpha Omicron Pi was third. In the competition for decorated cars Kappa Delta again was the winner, Phi Mu was
second and Students in Free Enterprise placed third.

Later that evening the traditional bonfire was cancelled due to the rain and spirit rally was held in the Gym. Pi Kappa
Phi was the winner of the Spirit competition.

On Friday banners were hung from Henry Hall proclaiming this year's themes. Before the banners became soaked
judges declared the Scroll first place winner. Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Omicron Pi won second and third respectively.

Saturday morning a student revue was held
on the Quad. Class reunions were in progress.
A luncheon was served and formal meeting
held.

The big event of the day was the basketball
game with LC vs Brewton Parker Junior Col-
lege. The game ended in a loss, but it gave
students the excitement of seeing the potential
that our team had. Following the game the

Homecoming Court
was presented.

The last official SGA
event for Homecoming
was the dance, were
the band "Seventh
Wonder" gave a won-
derful performance.

Grange Chorus, at bot-

This year's annual Quadrange Dance was the
best ever! The Theme for the semi-formal
dance was "The Love Boat". The Student Gov-
ernment Officers served as the crew for the
evening. The "Love Boat" departed from the port of
LaGrange via the Ramada Inn, with a destination of a
magical evening. Date of departure was Friday, Febru-
ary 13.

The entertainment was provided by the exciting
Malemen, a hot band that plays a variety of music,
great for dancing the night away. The Malemen per-
form at colleges everywhere, including sorority /frater-
nity formals. There was also a photographer provided
from Village Photographers of Auburn, Alabama.

There was a romantic atmosphere, great music, ^ ^ ^ ran ^ eacoc

fancy hors d'oeuvres and the presentation of the beautiful Quadrangle Court; all this, free of charge to L.C.
students. The Quadrangle Court consisted of 3 freshmen, 3 sophomores, 3 juniors, 2 senior ladies, and one
senior Quadrangle Queen, all chosen by popular vote of the student body.

This Quadrangle dance was provided by your student activities fee by your S.G.A. and solely for your
enjoyment. Attire for the evening was anything from a nice Sunday Dress to a long dress for the ladies; and a
sport coat /slacks outfit to a tux for the gentlemen.

legians at LaGrange College sponsored
a week of activities. A program was held
in the chapel with Mr. Oliver Greene.
Principal of LaGrange Boys Junior Col-

King celebration at Eberezer Baptist
Church in Atlanta was shown on the
big screen television in the chapel.
There were three showings at 10 A.M.,
2P.M., and 4PM. with the Association of
Black Collegians choir providing music
for the final showing. Black ribbons

Miss Iroup County Pageant

LaGrange College was well represented this year in Miss
Troup County Pageant. There were six lovely and talented
contestants from the Hill. Sheryl Stallings, sponsored by
the LaGrange Junior Women's Club was named as first
runner-up. This is quite an honor because if anything should prohibit
the winner from fulfilling her duties, the first runner-up would as-
sume the title. Miss Stallings was also voted "Miss Congeniality" by the
other contestants. She vocally performed "Come in from the Rain."

Second runner-up was Julie Ann Williams, who was sponsored by
the Phi Mu Fraternity. She performed a ballet dance to the popular song
"The Greatest Love of All."

Melody Carole Terry, sponsored by Kappa Delta Sorority was named
as fourth runner-up. She sang "Being Alive" from the Broadway musi-
cal "Company."

Codrey Lee Tinsley, sponsored by Phi Mu Fraternity; Greer Kristina
Gaston, sponsored by Headlines Salon; and Leah Cain Coleman each
performed very well. LaGrange College should be honored to have so
many talented ladies.

The pageant was sponsored by LC's own Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Brad White, current president, reported that the annual pageant was a
complete success.

Fran Howard, who attends Lee College, was crowned Miss Troup
County for 1987. Miss Howard was a student at LC during the fall
quarter.

The
Teen
Challenge
Choir

LaGrange College was honored Winter Quar-
ter on Friday the 13th, 1987, to hear the fantastic
and inspiring voices of "The Teen Challenge
Choir".

Wellness For Life

WELLNESS FOR LIFE is more than a slogan
for the newly formed Campus Wellness
Committee. It is their goal. The commit-
tee is working to increase the quality of
life for students, faculty and staff by helping people stay
well. That puts LaGrange College on the leading edge of a
wellness movement tnat is spreading nationwide.

Wellness is a positive approach to living an approach
that emphasizes the whole person. Wellness means adopt-
ing lifestyles that promote physical, mental, social and spiri-
tual well-being. Today people want to be more than alive or
just not sick. They want to experience a vitality that helps
them enjoy life to the fullest to live creatively That's what
wellness and the CWC (Campus Wellness Committee) is all
about. The CWC sponsored campus-wide campaigns relat-
ing to different facets of wellness. The first major campaign
(called "Wellness is a Life Affair") was in the early spring
and emphasized health assessment.

[his year LaGrange College for the
F first time in several years, had an
outstanding and very productive
Student Government Association
(SGA). The SGA's outstanding performance
was due to the leadership of Allen Stewart
who was backed by a fantastic line of officers;
Allyson Langley Women's Vice-president;
Ken Cline, Treasurer; Camille Scott, Secre-
tary; and (a confusing issue) Keith Whitener
(Fall Quarter), Alan Trainer (Winter Quarter),
and Hal Turner (Spring Quarter) for Men's
Vice-president. It was not just these seven
people who made SGA a success it was also
an active Legislative Council who helped to
make the 1986-1987 school year full of memo-
ries.

GREEK WEEK '87

7n fun and competition Greek organizations teamed up
for Greek Week '87; Kappa Sigma with Phi Mu. Pi Kappa
Phi with Alpha Omicron Pi and Delta Tau De.'ta with
Kappa Delta. Lori Johnson and Shawn Zwilling orga-
nized the weeks activities, which started with three car-washes
on Tuesday.

Kappa Sigma and Phi Mu raised the most money with more
than eighty dollars, Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Omicron Pi, also
with more than eighty dollars came next, with Delta Tau Delta
and Kappa Delta next.

All donations received for the carwashes went to LaGrange
Personal Aid. Softball games were played Wednesday and
Thursday with five male and five female players making up
each team. On Wednesday, the Kappa Sigma and Phi Mu team
was eliminated from competition. Thursday the Delta Tau
Delta and Kappa Delta team defeated the Pi Kappa Phi and
Alpha Omicron Pi team to win the tournament.

Wednesday's activities also included a Panhellenic Sing on
the patio and a tacky tie and hat social at the Kappa Sigma
fraternity house.

A day at the lake was the theme for Friday's activities. Greeks
gathered at West Point Lake for sun, games, bar-b-que, canoe-
ing and swimming, for those who had problems with canoes.
During dinner awards were given; Camille Scott received the
Miss Greek award and Alan Trainer received the Mr. Greek
award. These awards are voted on by all Greeks. The All Greek
award is given each year, to the team who has received the most
points during the week. Points are given for first, second and
third places in the carwashes, Softball and Greek games. This
year's winner was the Kappa Sigma and Phi Mu team.

Friday evening ended the week's festivities with all three
fraternity houses opened for mixers.

^T^Hfhe Producers" rocked L.C. in the gym on Thursday, March the 26th,
m 1987 to start the opening quarter off with a bang.
m "The Producers" are a local-to-the-south band that plays a variety of

JL. rock music that reaches from driving rock to introspective ballads.
Formed in 1980, the band has performed some 200 live shows a year, spanning North
America, released in 1981 (self -titled) includes such hits as "What's He Got", "Love
Lucy", and "Certain Kinda Girl". In 1982, they released their second album "You Make
The Heat" with its hit single "She Shelia" earning them even more fame.

This increasing popularity brought The Producers an invitation to perform at the
televised First Annual MTV New Years Eve Ball in 1983.

With this experience under their belt, The Producers were featured in a national ad
campaign (radio) for the Miller Brewing Company for Miller Beer.

Their latest album, "Run For Your Life", contains a set of exciting singles that will fit
everyone's tastes.

"The Producers" were a definite hit at LaGrange College which helped to start off a
very hot and fun filled Spring Quarter on the hill.

98 /Student Life

^^T^l ^ e Creek", formerly "Sugarcreek", a Charlotte-based rock band was one of the hottest ideas
the L.C. S.G.A. ever had. "The Creek" was the opening band for "The Producers" for the
m beginning of a wild, hot, long Spring Quarter.
^M^ "The Creek" mesmerized the L.C. Student Body with their sizzling, energetic, and

electrifying performance surprising everyone present that such a quality and professional sound of the 80's
Rock could come from this group.

"The Creek" definitely proved it was not some country-bluegrass band from North Carolina, but a
GREAT semi-hard-rocking band that has a sound similar to Styx, Asia, Guiffria, Kansas, or Journey.

Imagine how such a group could capture national attention by appearing on the country's largest
televised talent show, Star Search, Garner International attention by producing the best selling imported
album in England, be included on the Miller American Rock Newtwork compilation album, and yet they
linger on the verge of gaining the national recognition that they seek and deserve.

The fantastic band is comprised of five multi-talented musicians. Lead singer Tim Clark; Jerry West,
guitar; Mike Barber, bass; Lynn Samples, drums; and Rick Lee, keyboards.

LaGrange College will truely remember this fantastic band for a long time.

ist Church, yet is open to stu-
dents of all denominations
and beliefs. Anyone in the La-

F W Grange College community is

^ & }S invited to take part in Wesley

^A^^ and its programs. Our pur-

<^^^* poses can best be summed up

in four words learning, lov-
ing, reaching, and serving.
Wesley has its regular meeting time each Monday night, 7:30 p.m. in
the Student Center Ballroom. Special speakers have included various
ministers from around Georgia, a speaker from the Salvation Army, Bill
Matthews (clown ministry-UGA), Jimmy Moor (Director of Camp Glis-
son), Pierce Norman (United Methodist Evangelist), and the Christian
band Horizon from West Georgia College. Other Monday night pro-
grams have included fellowship and sharing times, student programs,
an old-fashioned Methodist Love Feast, and two programs at Dr. Mur-
phy's home.

Wesley, however, also participates in and sponsors many other cam-
pus activities, some of which include: Trick-or- Treat for UNICEF, Cam-
puswide Mission Dances, a weekly Vesper Service, Prayer Breakfasts,
small "Family" Groups for fellowship and growth, numerous outings
and retreats, Homecoming Events, May Day Step-Singing Competition,
an active participation in the SGA, and a monthly newsletter.

Through Winter quarter 1987, this yer's officers are: Brian Germano,
president; Ronny Cook, vice-president; Michele Foster, secretary; Lee
Schuh, treasurer; and Linda Hueseman, Newsletter Editor.

Wesley is an organization that strives to meet the needs of students
and that means you. We are not a perfect organization, but we are
striving to make at difference at L.C. by showing Christ's love in
action.

Chi Rho Alpha

G

hi Rho Alpha is a Christian organization which meets on Wednes-
day nights at 8:00 in the LaFayette Room. Debbie Chandler is the presi-
dent and Lynn McCord is the vice-president. This is the second year Chi
,Rho Alpha has been in existence at LaGrange College.

We plan many activities with BSU and the Wesley Fellowship. Some
activities are bonfires and cookouts at the lake, and trips to Atlanta and
Stone Mountain. We also bring in guest speakers such as Ron Ralston of
Campus Crusade International and Pastor Duane Swilley of Chapel Hill
Harvester Church in Decatur, Georgia.

Our purpose is to communicate and demonstrate the gospel of the
Kingdom as a witness on college campuses throughout the nation.
(Matt. 24:14) We believe Christianity is a lifestyle. We also believe that
Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the
Father but through Him. (John 14:6) By Jesus living in us, ruling our
lives, others can see Christianity as a lifestyle. God's love is the most

powerful force there is and
our goal is to love others as
Christ does and not to view
them with condemnation.

Jesus said, "If I be lifted up I
will draw all men unto me."
We do not look for the praises
of men, but of God. Our sole
purpose is to lift Him up!

The church today is
wounded by fellow brothers
striving in competition
against one another. We need
to recognize the enemy and it
is not our brothers in Christ.
We make a strong effort to be a
uniting force among Christian
organizations on campus, and
not a dividing factor. (I
Corinth. 12:25-26)

psychology among students at
LaGrange College; and to en-
courage students to continue
their interest in this field.

Membership is comprised
of students who have com-

hours of Psychology with a

minimum grade point average of 3.0. Members must also main-
tain an overall grade point average of 3.0.

New members are inducted into the Honor Society each year
during the fall quarter. The organization inducted the follow-

1986: Ann Cook, Beth Bauer, Marsha Stick, Lewis Spradlin Jr.,
Anne Marrocco, Edward Wood, and Melissa McDonald. Pre-
sent officers are: Julia Anglin, president; Cindy Patton, vice-
president; Lynn McCord, secretary; and Ellen Henderson, trea-

The Scroll

Ti

he Scroll is the magazine of creative arts at LaGrange College. It has a long traditi<
of provocative literature and art work that dates back to 1933. In keeping with tr i
tradition, this year's Scroll staff worked hard, looking for submissions from outside
the college community as well as from LaGrange College students. They receivn
photographs, poetry, fiction, essays and reminiscences and combined these for wh I
would become this year's Scroll. Entries came
from students, LaGrange residents, Georgians,
and people all over the country. The staff also
worked hard selling advertisement space to sup-
port their venture.

The Editor of this year's Scroll was April Love.
Associate Editors were Chip Duffey, Joyce John-
son, Laraine Lepingwell, Verona Maddox, Gwen
Noles, and Mike Patton. A prize was awarded for
best art work and for best piece of writing.

The Paper Airplane
Team (PAT) had a very suc-
cessful first year. Members
learned the differences
among the many varieties
of planes such as standard
and delta-wing, and how
to make these cruisers,
fighers or demonstration
models.

Competition proved to
be tough as the team
pulled together to have a
great first season, ending in a 7-4-1 record. The most
spectacular contest was between our school and South
Georgia College when the teams had to go into a vicious
tie-breaker in the Aerial Maneuvers category resulting
in our 15-14 victory.

"Our team did an outstanding job and I'm proud of
them." commented the illustrious team's Captain, Jack
Bagley. "Hopefully next year we will have enough mem-
bers to have two teams "A" Advanced and "B"
Beginning levels. Someday I hope we can rise to the
ultimate "D" Destroyer and "A + " Armagedton
plus levels."

The purpose of Campus Recreation and
Intramural Sports is "to provide wholesome
play, to foster a spirit of good sportsman-
ship, and to promote the development of a
sound mind in a sound body." To help this
purpose, tournaments in many different
sports are held throughout the year.

Events scheduled for both men and
women include volleyball, basketball, soft-
ball, tennis, badminton, bowling, "Pickle
Ball," and the Domino's Dash. In addition,
men competed in flag football, while co-ed
teams also participated in volleyball and
softball tournaments. Competition in all
these events are open to all students, faculty,
and staff at LC. Participation Awards were
presented to the men's and women's organi-
zations who had the greatest number of
participants and who earned the most
points during the year. In addition, male
and female "Athletes of the Year" were se-
lected.

This year, for the first time, a H-O-R-S-E
contest and a Super Hoops contest were
held. The Super Hoops was sponsored by
Schick and winners in both the men's and
women's divisions were eligible to compete
at a regional tournament in March. Congrat-
ulations to the following winner; Dana
Bruengraff, Amanda Cox, Cathy Cushing,
and Ann George (Women's Division) and
Jamie Davis, Scotty Quinn, Jeff Stidham,
and Jon Wright (Men's Division).

Studen leadership for Campus Intramu-
ral Sports was provided by Jenny Jack and
Scott Bradbury with assistance from frater-
nity, sorority, and independent intramural
representatives.

ALMA MATER

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,

Guardian of our days;
For thy spirit never failing

We will sing thy praise.
High Aloft we hold thy banner.

Ever loyal true;
And to thee, our Alma Mater,

We our pledge renew.

In the might groves of learning
Wisdom's path we've sought.
High upon thy lofty hilltop
Visions have been wrought.

From our hearts we sing the chorus
Time shall never change.

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater
Hail to thee, LaGrange.

Graduation 165

Successful

Since 1831 when LaGrange College first started, the students who have
graduated from our school have gone on to become the best in the
persuite of their careers. Here are a few words of wisdom they wish to
pass on to us, in the hope that they will endear us to a brighter future.
1. Neal Morgan 2. Marilyn Botkin 3. Terry Kay 4. Stuart Clay 5. Elizabeth
Harris 6. Carolyn Bernard.

Neal Morgan ... To
realize the true value of
ones education and the
realization that the
dedication to strive for
the highest
achievements both
socially and in academics
will be strong
considerations for the
career and future they
choose.

Marilyn Botkin . . . My
advice to today's students
would be to work hard at
getting a good basic,
liberal education.

Terry Kay . . . Dream.
Try. Learn. Then dream
again.

Stuart Clay ... I
challenge any LC person
to a tennis match for a
case of anything.

Elizabeth Harris . . .
First, seek God's will for
your life and recognize
in Jesus Christ. He gave
us the perfect pattern for
us to seek to imitate.
While remembering
nothing that is worth
anything ever comes
easy there is a price to be
paid.

Carolyn Bernard . . .
Take your education
seriously and enjoy your
college days the friends you
make here will be your best
friends forever. After graduation
when you commence your first
job, work hard, be honest, take
pride in your work and strive for
excellence.

Andrew Owen . . . Students
should take advantage of
personal contact with their
professors. Although such
sessions may not always be
"learning situations", the
challenge of such encounters to
communicate appropriately is
invaluable preparation for
whatever field of endeavor is
pursued.

Jeannette Little . . . Choose a
field you enjoy and go with it
to plan a career based on any
other consideration results in
frustration.

166 /Alumni

LaGrange College

1. Maone Dodson, 2. Edith Foster, 3. Blanche Farley, 4. Bettie Sellers, 5.
Judy Greer

Malone Dodson . . . Enjoy
the years at LaGrange College.
The friends you make on the
"hill" will be a source of
strength for years to come.
Don't rush too fast stop,
smell the roses, look and dis-
cover God's creation. Find
ways to be involved in local
churches and in the
community.

Edith Foster . . . Apply
yourselves to the best of your
ability. Try to "find"
yourselves. Keep your faith in
God, in yourselves, your
future.

Blanche Farley . . . Follow
* your own instincts. Be the
person you have to be.
Bettie Sellers . . . That a college
education is only the beginning
of knowledge a door to
knowing which way the road
lies and the road is only a good
one for as long as we continue to
learn. This I Believe.

Judy Greer . . . Take advantage
of every opportunity available to
you, especially those which may
not be of particular interest to
you at this moment. (Ex: lectures,
concerts, seminars, athletic
events, travel) College is more
than classes although they are
essential. Become disciplined,
but do not take yourselves too
seriously! Go for it!

Mark Johnson . . . I'm sorry to
be the one to break this to you, but
the diploma is just a ticket of
admission. After graduation is
when the hard stuff starts. You
will have success and failures,
triumphs and tragedies. Stay
alert, don't give up, take your vi-
tamins and never lose your sense
of humor. If you're wise and
have taken advantage of the les-
sons LaGrange can teach, you're
now prepared for a fascinating
experience. God bless you.

In closing, we see that Success is brought about
through the growth we experience in different types
of organizations and social groups to allow us to
express ourselves freely. This is how L.C. leads us
down the Road of Success, by her freedom to allow
us to be our own person. To LaGrange College we
say a special warm-hearted THANK- YOU for all she

I CRIED A DIFFERENT STORY

By Tim Ellis

I cried a different story

to hear your voice again
And the Birds flew

across my imagination

to a field that was not sane.
A winged tear wrapped 'round

my cheek
Searching for a playground

of a different richness

and a son of a different beat.
As I plucked a flower from

the fruit of thought
I heard a whispering

of mourning

and a sunrise was bought.
But I saw you again

laughing on a rainbow.
As if a cloud would

carry you away

to another heart you know.
Again I cried

a different story
And woke up next to you

this faithful morning.

by Sharon Diane Guida
A certain scene wanted to postpone itself,
Hold back, lay low and reform itself,
So nobody 'd have a change of heart,
No more revisions.

The scene reassessed its past, fixated
Like a reason about to lose its why,

Or a pass, its nerve,

It paused. It foreshadowed itself,

It couldn't help but set itself up.

It was:

Reared on nervouso trysts,

Kidnapped from office hours,

Spoon-fed on Saturday Park rendevous,

Tempted into serious luncheon cafes,

Rebelling against the mounting expectations,

Crying its eyes out to the night

Holding out for a climax

Pleading mornings for another point of view

Reconciling midday into some context.

Analyzing, analyzing its mind out of its fictions.

But diminished to the irony that it ever was

In the first place, first person.

And bored with the tingle of discretions.

The loneliness of prayer,

It lies around; it skirts the issue.

It can't get ahead

It can't make a living

Out of unearned emotions.

Rambling, it wanders

Into a walk-up on Broadway and 67th,

By some small twist of fate,

It finds its point in a period

And the man takes his hat and the next flight out
And the woman turns on her heel to her wonder-
ing family

Instep, quietly bleeding down the stairs
And the baby is aborted via a messy system
That slugs itself out
Somewhere on the Jersey shore
Or therabouts.

PERFORMING

Sit down beside me

and reach down

without me.

REMEMBRANCE

By Emily Paxton McClurg

Soft summer nights of forty years ago,

Small-town South, you were our world.

We knew not that any other place existed.

For you were everything we needed in that simple time.

You were love and security and a pat on the back when needed.

You were golden lazy days at the community swimming pool

And leisurely mornings spent under the pecan trees stringing beans or

peeling peaches.

You were children playing under the street light at night
While neighbors visited each other on front porches
Swinging gently and catching a bit of breeze

For there were no air conditioners or televisions to keep people inside
and isolated.

They would chat, and listen indulgently to the cries of
"Red Light" and "May I" or perhaps "Bom-bom-bom."

Those long-ago children are no more, but as adults they must once in a

while remember
As they lead their harried lives, trying to keep pace with today.
They remember, and they long briefly to hear their own children
Shouting and playing under the street light in the hot summer nights
While planting their roots deeply in your soil.
So as to sustain them in the years to come, wherever they may go.

THE CURIOUS DEITY"

REVEALING ME

By April Love

When you sit with me

and feel nothing

and say nothing

and think nothing

and when you sit with me

and don't even look at me

I feel naked and alone

and I feel exposed

And there is no pain

like the pain

of a revelation ignored.
