Throughout this past year, not to mention the countless years before, a dedicated man
has given unselfishly to promote all for which LaGrange College stands. He has a wealth
of knowledge on more different subjects than anyone on campus, and he has shared this
wealth with thousands of students.
Because of the time and the patience and the laughter and the tears he has given, and
because this man's whole life has been devoted to people, we dedicate the 1971 Quad-
rangle to a true Virginia gentleman,

What is a professor?
He's a rare breed of animal, vegetable, and miner-
al that's got some thing about sacrifice.
He could probably be making more money else-
where and could lots happier.
Yet, for some reason, he's here now making you
miserable.
Oh, sure, some of them are sad, too some of
them are real sad.
But most of them are okay real pals. Every now
and then, you get one that gives out blanket A's and
goes drinking wi th the guys.
But more often than not, you end up with a guy
that walks into class the first day and says, "For to-
morrow, read the first 20 chapters and be prepared
for a test."

Panthers, 70-71
The "Panther Pitt" was their home. Of the young men
who lived there some will not return as residents. How-
ever, those who were there, and others who lived else-
where, have made a momento for the college.
These men were nine links of a chain welded by
Coach Al Mariotti. They were the LaGrange College
Panthers of 1970-71. The record writers rearranged the
record book the boys had accepted the responsibili-
ty, worked hard, sacrificed time, blood, and energy,
and it paid off. Yes, the Panthers were in the news: win-
ning on the road, only one loss at home, first place in
the Carr ratings, and being the first LaGrange team to
reach the NAIA District 25 play-offs in Augusta.
Moments of the Panthers will live in the hearts of
faithful fans, the cheerleaders, and the outstanding men
who strived so hard to reach the goal of perfection.

STUDENT LIFE
"I still find each day too short for all the
thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to
take, all the books I want to read, and all the
friends I want to see. The longer I live the more
my mind dwells upon the beauty and the wonder
of the world."
John Burroughs

Fa//: 12 Weeks
'til Christmas
With Fall quarter came treshmen
green and wandering; and wondering,
When will the New Dorm be finished?" But
impatience was lost in the first hectic days
of orientation, registration, pictures, and
classes. In our excitement of a new begin-
ning, we rushed down to the gym and let
loose our pent-up tensions of the first week
at the Panhellenic Dance. With registration
and the first week completed, we began to
get organized into our daily schedules.

Homecoming 1970
The Classics IV performed in concert on
Thursday night to set off the Homecoming
Weekend. Midnight tissue paper pokers
and toilet paper rollers came out . . . and
colorful floats magically appeared. Ap-
peared, yes; but moved . . .?

becca Sherrill; 3rd runner-up, Barbara

Interrupting fall finals, Dobbs Building burned on November 20,
1970. The fire started in the costume shop behind the stage, and soon
spread throughout the building, making Dobbs a shell of brick and
rock.
Dobbs was a second home to the science and drama people who
worked, studied and played there. We will never forget the long labs,
Dr. Shibleys' mice getting loose, all night play rehearsals and Doc's of-
fice.
Fall guarter ended in a brilliant flame . . .

Winter: Time Out
to Study
The LaGrange campus shivers in the cold but
the cold was put aside and almost forgotten be-
cause of the red hot PANTHERS! Latent enthusi-
asm came bursting out and was encouraged by the
cheerleaders. We cheered the boys on to Augusta,
to the finals, and were not disappointed they
gave their best and every fan was proud of our
team.

Winter brought snow, and the Quadrangle
Dance. Charlene Hampton was crowned gueen,
and her senior court was Carol Vaughan, Delores
Cruze, Maid of Honor Mikie Sackett, and Peggy
Studstill. Sharon Nicholson represented the Junior
Class, Sandy Willis, the Sophomore Class, and
Anna Moldenhauer the Freshman Class.

Leslie Frost, daughter ot Robert Frost, was
brought to the campus by the Jenny Lee Epps
Lecture Series in February.
The Curtain Raisers presented Neil Simon's
hilarious comedy, Barefoot In the Park in the
Simpson Room. The cast out-did themselves in
the "theatre-in-the-round" production direct-
ed by John Mayberry.

Miss LoGronge College
The 1971 Miss LaGrange College Pageant, directed by Ces Lawton, put
Susie Chappell in the running for Miss Georgia. Twenty talented girls par-
ticipated in the pageant, making it a great success.
The girls competed in swimsuit, evening gown, and talent competition.
Named Miss Congeniality was Sharon Nicholson, and the five finalists were
Lu Marrah, Jamie Ward, Susie Chappell, Cindy Wapensky, and Martha
MacMillan.
CONTESTANTS: Cathy Fuller, Pat Hicks, Martha MacMillan, Pat Coker, Sharon
Nicholson, Sandy Willis, Cathy Vining, Peggy Freeman, Bonita Harris, Rebecca Sher-
rill, Martha MacMillan, Charlene Hampton, Janet Mclntire, Jamie Ward, Lu Murrah,
Thetis Sealey, Dena Watkins, Karen Samble, Dottye Martin, Cindy Wapensky.

The first National Panhellenic
Conference group on campus be-
came the Delta Chi chapter of
Kappa Delta during winter quarter.
The Phi Mu Wash Board Band per-
formed for Kiwanis men in Thomas-
ton and LaGrange.
The months wore on, and Smith
Parlor was afire.

Spring: Fun and Sun!
Ah, spring quarter the dogwoods and azaleas bloom, and it's time to party!
The New Folk sang on the patio, and the second local sorority to go national became the
appa Phi chapter of Phi Mu. Alpha Phi Beta became Lambda Chi chapter of Alpha Omicron
, to complete the NPC on campus.
Involvement 71 was sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi, and brought national recognition to L.C.
pnator Gaylord Nelson, the Father of Earth Day, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Dodd's discus-
on on sexual behavior turned out the be the "death" of Jackson, from drinking Chattahoo-
lee River water. We showed our concern in a processional behind the hearse carrying Jack-
>n's "body."

May Day, '71
0- IWmW
With the burning of Dobbs in November, '71
May Day was held on the patio. A dismal Thurs-
day and Friday darkened hopes for a sunny May
1st, but Saturday beamed in clear and beautiful.
The May Court was presented by Master of
Ceremonies Russ Everitt. The Court was, repre-
senting the Freshman Class, Anna Moldenhauer,
and Kiki Carmichael; from the Sophomore Class,
Cathy Mashburn and Sandy Willis; from the
Junior Class, Cindy Wapenshy and Carol Kang-
ieser; and from the Senior Class, Delores Cruze
and Charlene Hampton. Maid of Honor Mikie
Sackett was escorted by Luther Tison, and then
came Queen Connie Lyle escorted by King
Frank Parsons.
Step-singing competition followed. Kappa
Sigma was the only men's group to sing, and
won with "Burning Bridges.'' Phi Mu won sorority
competition with "Wonderful World" and Delta
Tau Delta and Alpha Omicron Pi won combined
with "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor."
175
176
Queen Peggy Cobb and King Ed Frazier reigned over
May Day '70. Their court was, from' the Freshman Class,
Cindy Lancaster and Cathy Mashburn; from the Sophomore
Class, Nancy Key and Mary Lewis; from the Junior Class,
Carol Vaughan and Connie Lyle; and from the Senior Class,
Beth Dupree and Libby Field. Maid of Honor, Jeanne Marie
Blackburn was escorted by Bill Blake. Step-singing winners
were Pi Kappa Phi for "Scarborough Fair"; Phi Mu for "The
Wild Eyes of a Child"; and Kappa Sigma and Phi Mu com-
bined singing "Mighty Big Ways."
177
"Stop the World, I Want to Get Oft," starred John Wil-
on as Little Chap. Linda Parsons and Russ Everitt played the
y\r\ and Boy in "The Fantastics." The Shorb Brothers re-
urned with their songs and discussions.
Finals were upon us before we knew it. What is it about
pring quarter finals that transforms us from our reserved
ledicated selves, into neurotics (nu rot' ik), adj. I . a suffering
rom emotional instability, characterized especially by anxie-
y and a feeling of insecurity.

Only the Griffin
could symbolize
West Point Pepperell
. . . Because only the Griffin symbolizes all the
things WestPoint Pepperell is known for.
In ancient mythology, the Griffin, with the head
and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, was
the guardian of treasure. He had strength. He had
agility, vigilance. In the textile industry, in our plant
communities and wherever we do business, West-
Point Pepperell is known for those same qualities.
Proudly displayed on all our products, the leg-
endary Griffin tells the modern-day fact of the dedi-
cation to quality, integrity and reliability of more
than 20,000 WestPoint Pepperell people.
In your home, clothing and automobile in
industry and wherever American military forces
serve-- the Griffin marks the finest in textiles.
Textiles from WestPoint Pepperell, for today and
tomorrow.

Job responsibility and a

These are the two things most

You voted for a change in the 1971 Quadrangle, and it has bee*n a
great undertaking for all who were involved. Trying to picture the whole
year as completely as possible has been our challenge. We had our prob-
lems and disappointments, but we worked long-hours in accomplishing
our goal.
This book is the result of many people working together, but I must say
a special thank you to Susan Nolan, better known as Pert, for all she's
done especially putting up with me. I am most grateful to Mr. Shel-
horse and Mr. Lawrence, our advisors, for their help, and to Ralph, Shel-
ley, Janet, Eddie and Donna for their special jobs.
During this past year I've learned more fhan ever before I need PEO-
PLE, and working with them I have completed a task I thought I could
never finish. I hope this book has something meaningful to each of you
if so, it was worth it
