REACT

20 Years As
LaGrange College
President

Much is required of a college president; obviously
a special kind of person is needed for the task. He must
be able to compress days into hours and hours into
minutes. Dr. Henry is that kind of man. The difficult
and extraordinary are an integral part of his life.

Since Dr. Henry has been president of LaGrange
College, vast improvements have been made. The stu-
dent enrollment has grown from 146 to 574. The faculty
has increased in number from 20 to 44, and the physical
layout has increased from 5 buildings to 14 at present
with future improvements being planned.

Both students and alumni look to Dr. Henry as an
outstanding leader because of his activities in educa-
tional, ecclesiastical, and civic affairs. Serving as presi-
dent of LaGrange College for the past 20 years has only
been a small part of his service to mankind.

The past is gone but not forgotten; we look to the
future of LaGrange College with joyful anticipation.
And some day we are confident we will hear, "Well
done, thou good and faithful servant."

Greek life is, in essence, friendship, participation, and
often security. Parties, rushing, pledging, and inductions
complete a cycle constantly repeated, yet filled with new fun
and satisfaction. The Greeks strive to maintain an equilib-
rium between social and academic life on campus. They are
a significant part of the life of each person who belongs
often a subtle part, yet always distinct.

Beta Mho

Ken Byars, First Vice President; Winn Henderson, President; Terry Conner, Second Vice President; Bill
McGough, Secretary-Treasurer; George Teel, Parliamentarian.

Beta Rho Fraternity is new to LaGrange College this year. In fact, up until Janu-
ary 3, 1968, Beta Rho was not recognized as a functional fraternity. On that date, the
Panhellenic Council chartered the five original members as LaGrange's fourth frater-
nity.

Beta Rho, itself, was derived simultaneously from the English and the Greek. As
such, it means "brothers regardless, willing to strengthen".

Beta Rho Fraternity was established to provide a new and unique brotherhood for
select college men who are sincerely interested in academic, athletic, and social prowess,
who are determined to make a success of their futures, and who desire continuation and
longevity of the fraternal ideals and purposes.

-Breaking Panthers

"We'll win some we shouldn't and lose some we should have won." That predic-
tion couldn't better describe the 1967-68 LaGrange College Panthers. They opened the
season by soundly defeating Columbus College, 95-88, for their first of eighteen wins.
Upon returning home the next game, the Panther's lost a heart-breaker to Alabama
College, 58-55. This seemed to be the trend the Panthers followed throughout the first
part of the season sometimes up and sometimes down. Highlights of the first part of
the season came from a 102-87 victory over arch-rival Huntingdon College, which
marked the greatest point output for the season and Second Place in the Augusta
Invitational and Blue-Gray Tournaments. With the start of 1968, the Panthers seemed
to catch fire, winning six in a row and capturing the Mercer Invitational Tournament.
An unexpected loss to Armstrong State and an overtime loss to Berry College again put
a mar on the Panther's slate, but they retaliated quickly with wins over Armstrong,
West Georgia, and Georgia Southwestern. Disaster struck when the team's leading
rebounder, Tom Duckett, injured his knee. In the next two weeks the Panthers faced
five Conference foes and Duckett's presence was missed. Although they were defeated
by the Conference leaders, Valdosta State and Berry, the Panthers gained Third Place
by defeating other Conference opponents.

The Panthers distinguished themselves as a team and as individuals: Earl Holmes
All-Conference, All-District, GIAC, and leading scorer (468 points); Tom Duckett
leading rebounder; Garland Gudger playmaker. Through team co-operation, the Pan-
thers gained an unprecedented number of wins.

Epilogue

I have thought of beaches, fields,
Tears, laughter.

I have thought of homes put up
And blown away.

I have thought of meetings and for
Every meeting a goodbye.
I have thought of stars going alone,
Orioles in pairs, sunsets in blundering
Wistful deaths.

I have wanted to let go and cross over
To a next star, a last star.
I have asked to be left a few tears
And some laughter.

simple men admire them;
and wise men use them.

EITHER SIDE

DAYor NIGHT

The many moods and faces of LaGrange College are a hard attitude to capture
on film. Our task was to portray this life force and insure a memory of 1968 on the Hill.
The time for that memory is not for now but at a later time when all is in shadow.
Hopefully the '68 QUADRANGLE will be the beacon for that memory to appear out
of the haze. This yearbook will remain in my memory as a product of those who gave
it life and of the life blood of the book, the students of LaGrange College.

Despite the long hours and the many sleepless nights, postponed dates, and missed
classes, I've survived to see the end . . . one deadline, the final one, met on time and
sent to the publisher. It is important that I extend my sincerest thanks to those who
have endured my mistakes, depressions, temper, and general bad mood:

... to Pat Trice, who jumped in at the end and pulled us through.

... to Danny Dawson, who kept us in the black all year . . . and allowed me to

spend all this money!
... to my staff, who succeeded in showing up at the last minute and made each

deadline far from monotonous! (I think you stayed up nights watching Johnny

Carson . . . right staff . . . DUH!)
... to Sam Hornsby, who was always there when I needed reassurance.
... to Bill Baker and Taylor Publishing Company, who worked all these miracles,
... to the student body, whose support made this headache possible!

With the closing of this cover 1968 at LaGrange College lies bound within. I hope
you have associated with the memory and will continue to do so through the years.
