THE L C. STUDENT'S CREED

Life is mine to live. That I may cherish it
And right royally meet its responsibilities,
I would lay aside that which is
Narrow, selfish, ignoble, and unkind;
The false, superficial, the dishonest
I would shun in thought, word, and deed.
Rather may I cultivate in my college life
Those traits and ideals that will fit me
To weave dreams into realities, and impressions into
character,

To meet bravely the hard tasks of life,
To bring joy to those who falter in their tasks.
I would strive to judge more kindly,
Trust more fully, and love more deeply,
That my life may reflect His goodness,
And my soul may grow in the knowledge
Of Him, whom to know is life eternal.

Every student at LaGrange College is a member of the Student Government Association, and the
Student Government Council is elected by the vote of the entire student body. This Council makes the
rules according to the powers granted to it by the president and faculty.

Each year the Council arrives early to help in the orientation program for new students. This pro-
gram is brought to a conclusion with the Junior- Freshman wedding. After the wedding a formal pledg-
ing ceremony takes place in the little chapel, when all the new students are granted full membership.

The Student Government Council works to help every student feel at home on the campus and become
a vital part of the student body. The Council seeks to uphold through their example the highest in schol-
arship and Christian living.

To unify all religious activities on the campus, we have a Student Christian Association of which every
student is a member. This association is directed by a cabinet composed of officers, the chairmen of seven
committees, the presidents of other major organizations, and a faculty advisor.

At the beginning of the year each student is invited to join one of the committees which either serve
the campus directly or seek to educate the students on local, national, or international affairs. Through
the World Relatedness Committee, the S.C.A. supports Darij, a small Polish boy suffering from tubercu-
losis. Other committees plan vespers, meditations, and special services for various occasions. The S.C.A.
also looks to the recreational side of the students' life through such activities as a costume party, a hay-
ride, and a pillow fight.

The W.A.A. Council has complete charge of making plans for Stunt Night, Field Day, and May Day.
In the Stunt Night competition, the W.A.A. awards a cup to the winning class. In Field Day activities,
the sororities vie for the coveted Field Day Trophy. The Council sets up tournaments in tennis, volley-
ball, ping pong, badminton, and archery, and each sorority may enter as many girls as it desires.

For the Council, the climax of the athletic year comes at the W.A.A. banquet when awards, trophies,
jackets, and letters are presented to those who have earned them.

The LaGrange College W.A.A. is a member of the Georgia Athletic Federation of College Women,
and through this association we learn of the latest trend in athletics. This year we are honored to have
a member of our council, Mavis Sprayberry, serve as secretary of this state organization.

In a spring election, the editor, the business
manager, and the advertising manager of the
QUADRANGLE are elected by the student
body. These three people meet with the old
staff and determine who will fill the other
positions. This group then has complete
charge of everything that composes the an-
nual: pictures, art work, literary work, and
advertisements.

As soon as school opens, the picture-taking
begins and continues until the last moment
before the annual goes to press. Some of the
students complain about the crowded picture
schedule with its necessity of many clothes
changings, but in May they seem delighted to
see the finished product. The students do not
see the literary and art work in the making,
but both of these are important to the publi-
cation. Of course, the advertisements are the
backbone of it all.

We, the QUADRANGLE staff, are grateful
to the many people who have cooperated in
making this annual possible, and we hope the
students will find the book worthy of our
efforts.

Four times a year, the literary magazine of LaGrange College is published by a staff of students
elected from the student body. The Scroll contains special features which are usually prose works pertain-
ing to the season of the publication, and regular features such as the dedication to a faculty member, a
book review, the alumni news, and a "Letter from Elsie." The rest of the magazine is devoted to poetry
which is submitted by students. The staff then selects the best of that which is submitted for publication.

At the end of the year, a group of judges chosen from the faculty considers all work published in the
Scroll that year. They judge the contributions as to excellence and quantity and elect not more than
four members to the Scroll of Fame. Pictures of the students thus honored are hung in Hawkes 6.

Admission to the Curtain Raisers comes
after a try-out before the entire group, which
consists of a scene from a play, a humorous
reading, and a serious reading. Membership
in the Curtain Raisers is one of the necessary
steps towards being elected to Alpha Psi
Omega, the national dramatic fraternity.

The Curtain Raisers have had a very suc-
cessful year this year, presenting thus far,
"The Late Christopher Bean," "Double
Door," and "Summer and Smoke." In the
spring they will render "Hamlet" and "Teach
Me How to Cry."

The Choralaires is a mixed chorus directed by Walter Westafer. Membership in the group is gained
by an audition before Mr. Westafer, and students in all departments are eligible.

Each year the Choralaires perform for civic clubs in and around LaGrange, and at Christmas they
present a major work. This year Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" was given for the first time in LaGrange
with both student and guest soloists. Though the oratorio is extremely difficult, it was done with skill
and understanding.

As a highlight of the year, the Choralaires go on tour every spring. They strive to go in a different
direction each year to acquaint more and more people with LaGrange College.

In 1958-59 the Panthers set a new school record in
winning 17 games while losing seven. In their maiden
voyage in the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Associa-
tion, the team amassed an impressive 11-2 chart to finish
in second place behind Oglethorpe's Stormy Petrels who
were undefeated in league play.

The 1958-59 edition was the best-balanced team in the
history of the school. Four of five starters, Jerry Carden,
Wallace Brown, Wayne Copeland, and Buddy Grimes
averaged nearly ten points per game each, and the other
starter, Captain Olin Harp, was one of the leading re-
bounders and defensive stars.

Competing in district 25 of the National Athletic In-
tercollegiate Association, LaGrange led in three depart-
ments for the season. Wayne Copeland was the only in-
dividual leader, pacing the rebound corps. He set a
Panther record of 26 rebounds against Berry College.

LaGrange led the district in points scored per game.
They set a new standard against West Georgia as they
whipped the Braves 120-32.

LaGrange, with only one man who topped the 6-2 mark,
amazingly enough led the section in rebounding. The
Panthers averaged better than 50 recoveries per outing.

Highlight games of the year were a 47-45 loss to Ogle-
thorpe, probably the best played game in Georgia Col-
lege ranks for the year; a 68-66 win over Valdosta State
in overtime; and the final game of the year a 46-54 victory
over Shorter.

Other outstanding performances besides Copeland's
26 rebound showing were Wallace Brown's 33 points
against Troy State, Jerry Garden's 26 points against West
Georgia, Wayne Copeland's 30 points against Auburn
Freshmen, and Larry Boswell's 25 points and 15 rebounds
against Valdosta State.

BETSY MOORE

Cheerleaders are great boosters of school spirit,
and ours are no exception. They lead the cheers
before the home crowd at Callaway Auditorium
and often go with the team to far distant schools to
let the players know that we are all behind them.

Soon after school opens the cheerleaders are
elected in try-outs which are held before the whole
student body. Six girls are chosen, plus one alter-
nate. The cheerleading squad, besides cheering at
the basketball games, is in charge of pep rallies and
usually ylans the after-game parties.

The LaGrange Boys' Tennis Team for the 1958 season was
composed of five members, only two of which returned
Jerry Binns, No. 1 singles, and Roy Johnson, No. 2 singles.
The Girls' team consisted of Mary Horton, No. 1 singles,
Mavis Sprayberry, No. 2 singles, and Linda Woodson, not
pictured. Each team member gained his or her position by
playing elimination games on the team in a tennis ladder.

ROY JOHNSON

The 1959 slate of opponents were Emory-at-Oxford,
Shorter, and West Georgia, including return bouts with the
latter two. The teams won all school matches for the season,
losing only one individual match.

The 1959 season will be boosted by joining the N.I.A.C.
tennis conference.
