THE AUGUSTA COLLEGE
LYCEUM SER
ES
Traditionally, the Lyceum was an organization in a town
or a village that obtained culturally enlightening speakers
and groups for the entertainment of the general populace.
Although Augusta College is not a city or a village, it
has been described as a community.
The Augusta College Lyceum committee for this year
presented for this community such various forms of en-
lightment as the Ramsey Lewis Trio for music; offered a
current newsmaker, the defense lawyer William Kunstler;
drama with the National Shakespeare Company's perform-
ance of Moliere's "The Miser"; and a scholar. Dr. Albert
Ellis, a specialist in Human sexuality.
Plus the committee also brought back to this campus two
popular offerings from the past Lyceum series: Russ
Burgess, noted Parapsychologist, and The Proposition, an
improvisional theatre group.

I This year the Augusta College Film
Series outdid itself and locked up a fine
play bill in its offering of movies for the
college community.
in the past the film series had a few
good films, but this year there were 19
excellent movies to be viewed such as
PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, SLAUGHTER-
>>1 HOURS FIVE, 81/2, DR. STRANGELOVE,
Ill'i CLAIRE'S KNEE, LITTLE BIG MAN, and
THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.
And the projector still roils with an
even more impressive list of films for
the coming year.

COTTON
Fall quarter began well with
Committee in concert, an im-
provisational theatre group which
went over well with the audi-
ence, but Teen Angel arrived the
next weekend and left with a bad
reception.
Winter quarter was a drag with,
Dave Loggins canceling his date
with A.C. student body. Home-
coming sagged with a defeat, and
a few students went to see Gene
Cotton. He sang every now and
then, introduced his wife, and
talked a lot about his savior.

The students eagerly waited for
spring and the good times. They
got a bluegrass festival that was a hit
with scholars of the down home
picking and singing art form. The
feature was Bill Monroe and the
Blue Mountain Boys. Monroe has
delighted audiences across the
country since the 1930's and has
become known as the "Father of
Bluegrass".

However, the big event of the season was
Rick Nelson and his back-up band. The
Stone Canyon Band. The students' reactions
to this former child television star were
mixed. The noise was bad, and the Real
Stone Canyon wasn't along to support Ozzie
and Harriet's youngest son.

CULLUM THIRD WORLD CULTURE
PROGRAM
The Cullum Third World Culture pro-
gram has been presented at Augusta Col-
lege for the past three years. In 1973
the program was initiated with a study of
India, in 1974 Brazil, and this year with
Nigeria.
This year's program covered many
aspects of Nigerian culture with speakers
lecturing about economics, history, pol-
itics and tribal witches; movies were also
viewed by the A.C. students involved
with the study of this African country.
Last year, the drama people did a
Brazilian play which was warmly received
by both the students and citizens of the
community. This year they staged "The
Strong Breed" by Wole Soyinka, a
Nigerian playwright.
Next year, the 200th birthday of the
United States of America, the Cullum pro-
gram will study this country and all its
diversity.

The Augusta College Chateau.
The Coffeehouse established itself in its
second year of operation. Students
packed the house many nights to see
Marx Brothers films, the Rice Brothers
in performance. Ball, Taylor, and Ball,
Ross & Bowles, and many other groups.
And while the students watched, they ate
bushels of free popcorn and enjoyed
themselves.

A beauty king, female swabbies, wom-

erous other examinations of woman's
role in today's world was the purpose of
Role Reversal Day sponsored by the
Augusta College Sociology Club in late
November 1974.
Of course. Jay Bower, Basketball player
and Beauty King, didn't expect to see
himself on the Six o'clock news that after-
noon, but he did.

FRENCH
SPONSORED BY THE
A.C. FRENCH CLUB
A french cafe, chocolate sandwiches, cheese and bread,
flowers, combined with a stylish vendome were some of the
ingredients of a fair put together by the French Club in
Fall 1974 as a fund raising device. It only lasted a day, but
for that day the C.A.C. plaza had a definite Gallic atmosphere.

The Augusta College Stu-
dent Government did not
give the pie in the sky to its
constituents, but instead
gave them some marquees
and a test file.
The marquees now stand
around laden with pos-
ters advertising the various
on-campus events for the
week. The student can
now go to the library and
look at the tests that his
teacher used to examine the
acquried wisdom of the
past quarter scholars.

A. C. BAND
The A.C. Student Band under the direction of John Scott,
music instructor, provides most of the warm-up and half
time entertainment for the Jaguar Basketball games. The band,
besides creating the musical enthusiasm for the athletic con-

In Fall 1974, Augusta College expanded Into another
area of education with the opening of a child
development center on Watkins Street. The center
was designed to educate the three to five year old
child.
Fall 1974 marked another development in the re-
lationship of the child and college with the re-
location of the Augusta College Baby Sitting Ser-
vice to 1055 Katherine Street.
The service proved itself to just as popular with
the student parents as it had been for the first two
years of operation.

Augusta College Jaguars won 19, lost 9 games split their con-
ference standing with a 5-5 record. But the outstanding triumphs
of this year at the A.C. field house were the Jaguars' defeat of
Valdosta by one point, but a win is good as a wink to the Spotted
Cat. The team also had a nine game winning streak which started
with the defeat of Piedmont, score of 129-72, and ended with
Armstrong state breaking a claw with an 80-73 loss for the A.C.
team.
Speaking of losses, the Jaguars lost two valuable members of
the team this year. Chick Ludman, who could do no wrong on
the court or in the class room, graduated in the spring. Coach
Lenny Carlson announced at the end of spring quarter that he
was going over the big water to coach Basketball in Europe.
They will be missed.
year was the Valdosta State Blazers. And
the way the season started this year,
Valdosta State had rubbed the Jaguars'
noses with a twenty point defeat earlier
in the season. But at home on the nigh
of January 25th, Augusta College madi
revenge a fine art form with an one poini
defeat of the Blazers.
In the campus newspaper's account o;
that game, A.C. came close to losinj
several times throughout the game, but a;
the article in the Jan. 31th BELL RINGElj
stated, "With only one minute and eleveti
seconds left in the game, the score wa:
dismal 67-74.
The Jags put on a full-court press and
held the Blazers at 74, while they made six-
points. With only five or six seconds left
in the game, Tommy Ayers put the Jagl
ahead 75-74. ^
The Blazers took the ball in and fired it
to Alston, their crack shot, but he tripped
and fell, and the clock ran out." ?
The Valdosta coach expressed souif
grapes, but Marvin Vanover's face wa^;
wreathed in a big smile of sweet revenge. ^

From Piedmont College to U.S.C. at Spartan-
burg, with Valdosta St. as a high point, the
Jaguars played through a nine game
winning streak during winter quarter.
The secret to this burst of victory was not
a few good heros of the previous teams,
but a team made up of many good players.
Vanover stated that he was able to sub-
stutite at any time, and this was the device
that made the streak possible.

Of course, it ended with Armstrong's defeat

The Augusta College Jaguar tennis team had
a bout with Lady Fortune's whims this year.
She smiled on them during the season,
and the team gained twelve wins and two
losses for the year. But at the conference
tourney at Savannah, the lady frowned, and
the Jaguars came home with a fourth.

WOMEN'S "
INTERCOLLEGIATE
SPORTS
COMES TO
This year was very important for Women in Georgia
and Augusta College. The state legislature voted down
the E.R.A., and this school established serious women
sports with intercollegiate basketball and tennis.
The lady Jaguars, besides being a first for Augusta
College, showned their sharpened claws to their op-
ponents and gave their fans an example of how basket-
ball should be played.
The lady Jags ended the year with an 11-6 record,
but throughout the season, people thought they
played a good brand of ball.
Women's tennis did not fare as well as basket-
ball, but from the first, they held their own against
more seasoned teams. The team accumulated a 4-5
record, and Mary Ardiff, number one seed, was
chosen to tour Mexico with the Southern Comets to
play various Mexican teams.
