In admiration and respect we dedicate this third volume of WHITE COLUMNS to
Mr. Norman L. Galloway. Dean Galloway, we ask you to accept the dedication
in thankfulness for all you have meant to the students of Augusta College through-
out the years as a teacher and more recently as Dean of Students. To you we
dedicate this volume, a record of work and memories, with our sincere good
wishes.
HISTORIC AUGUSTA
In 1910, The Academy of Richmond County, under the Board of Education of Richmond County, added
a year of college and commercial work to the standard four-year high school program.
The Junior College of Augusta was founded on August 15, 1925, to meet the need for a standard junior
college in the Augusta area. Operations started with the 1926-27 session in what was at that time the
new Academy Building. The college has been fully accredited since its beginning in 1926. The first
sophomore class graduated in the spring of 1927.
After the closing of the Augusta Arsenal in December of 1955, the County Board of Education made
application for the western section of the property for educational purposes. On February 12, 1957, a deed
was received conveying 38.98 acres of land and thirty-four buildings. On February' 18, 1957, a deed to
an additional 5.65 acres was received.
The Junior College of Augusta opened on its new campus in September, 1957. During the year, the
Board of Education applied to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia for the incorpora-
tion of The Junior College of Augusta into the University System as a State-supported institution. The
application was approved in June, 1958, with the Board of Regents assuming control on September 1,
1958. The name of the college was changed to Augusta College.
On March 17, 1959, 15.59 acres of former Augusta Arsenal property containing nine large brick build-
ings were deeded to the Regents of the University System.
On June 1, 1959, the Augusta College assumed responsibility for the evening freshman and sophomore
course work which had previously been offered by the Augusta Center of the University of Georgia as
extension course work.

The Sophomore Class of 1960 is the first graduating class of the new Augusta
College. It is the first to complete two years under the University System of
Georgia. In 1959 the freshmen elected as their president Barbara Brennecke,
who also served as vice-president of the Student Council. Other officers elected
were Bill Kuhkle as vice-president and Jerry Logan as secretary-treasurer. Stu-
dent Council Representatives were David Ward and Jack Padgett, Jr., who also
served as secretary-treasurer of the Student Council. Ted deTreville and Georgia
Langford served as representatives for the Spring quarter. Bebe Tabb and Bill
Kuhkle were voted Freshman Favorites.
Events in 1960 included the election of officers and the choosing of Bob Alston
and Barbara Brennecke as Mr. and Miss Augusta College. At the Christmas
Belle Ball, Ginger Hitchcock was crowned Miss Christmas Belle. Bob Alston
was elected Student Chaplain, the first to hold this office at Augusta College.

Lab and Library Assistants
Student Financial Assistance is available to Augusta College students in several
forms. There are a considerable number of scholarships, grants, and loan funds
established by individuals and groups in the Augusta area. In addition to these,
work scholarships have been set up by the YAACA and the Richmond County
Athletic Association for male students at Augusta College who assist in the Ele-
mentary school athletic programs. Work Assistantships are offered by the school
to students helping in the offices, laboratories, and library.
