The staff of the 1942 Maids and A
Man dedicates this volume in token
of our love for her as a teacher, our
admiration for her as a scholar, and
our devotion to her as a leader.

In constructing this yearbook we have attempted to pic-
ture our activities at Tubman High School during the
school year 1941-1942 and to confine fragments of the elu-
sive Tubman spirit into a book of pleasant memories with
what measure of success the pages following will indicate.

STAFF

Maids and a Man tells the story of our activities as
a staff better than the editors could tell it. The
trials that attended the construction of even such
a simple book as this one quickly became pleasant
memories as the annual began to take shape. Our
layouts are familiar to you, Tubman girl for whom
this yearbook was made, and we have identified
them sufficiently for you to recognize them many
years from now when your memory will require
a bit of coaxing to recall them. We have not
numbered these pages for we hope that you will
never need that mechanical aid in finding yourself,
your friends, your favorite teachers, and your
special activities as herein pictured.

This year the Glee Club became an a capella choir.

services in several churches in Augusta. At the
end of the year, the Glee Club enjoyed its banquet.

The Dramatic Club chose for its spring production
THE FRENCH MAID AND THE PHONOGRAPH,
a play well-known to high school audiences. In
the scenes pictured, Mollie Green (Sally Bussey)
is showing Gladys and Pauline (Grace Toole and
Martha Nell Pugh) how well her sister's maid
(Katherine Norvell) speaks French.
In the other scene, Madam Renard (Nancy Hardy)
is selling the phonograph to Flossie (Harriet
Hazard) while Lotta Ayres (Gloria Hamilton) and
Mrs. Green (Mary Lay Ewing) look on.
Just as important as the actors to the success of
our play are the girls who set the stage and gath-
ered the props. They are Bertha Lee, Maguerite
Toole, Jennie Sue Cliatt, Martha Weinges, Mar-
garet Grammer, Emily Sheftall, and Joelle Rush.

The Tubman Chapter of the National
Honor Society was organized in the
spring of 1940.

Membership is based on qualities of
leadership, scholarship, character, and
service. Members must maintain a
scholastic average of eighty-five or
above in every subject during each year.
Juniors and Seniors are eligible for ac-
tive membership in the society.
Membership in the National Honor So-

There was strong competition between the intra-

the seniors(with the vetei-ans Ruth Read and Selita
Gulledge on their team) were favored to win the
tournament, the juniors downed all opponents
with the precision of their team work and walked
off with top honors. The annual Faculty-Senior

under the leadership of their captain. Miss Edna

For the first time in the history of Tubman, the

by Jean Lichtenstcin. who was seroiusly threat-

The ring tennis tournament ended with a champ-

with the juniors victorious.

Ground-Sticks ground-sticks--ground-sticks-ball!
became familiar words to the more sturdy Tubman
athletes during the hockey season. There was
interest in this lusty sport which was played at
Tubman for the first time in three years. The
final game, played between the Reds and Blues,
ended in a 1 - 1 tie that was still unbroken even
after an extra period had been given to the attempt
to break the tie.

Another new sport at Tubman this year was Ar-
chery. It was limited to the members of the
Athletic Council because we lacked equipment,
but we expect to form an archery club next year.

The juniors won the basket ball tournament, an
easy victory since the seniors had to default be-
cause of an insufficient number of players.

As the annual goes to press we are making pre-
parations for soft ball and tennis tournaments.
We have had a successful year and we are looking
forward to an even more successful one next
year.

WHILE

COUNTERCLOCKWISE ....

The hardest of all ... . EXAMS! .... Latin
huddle with Leona Jane calling signals ....
Just three minutes out for a Fire Drill ....
Speed test in a class in typing ....

WE WORK...

One of the better days in Biology Lab
no frogs! .... And in Chemistry Lab
no smells! .... We learn to cook .... and to
sew .... and we go to the Library when we
have a free period.

POETASTERS . . .

WISTARIA

Through my window

Comes the scent of new wistaria,

Heavy and fragrant in the darkness

The still darkness.

And I know

That on the shining morrow

It will swing

In heavy grape-like clusters,

Jostled by the breeze,

And drop its satin petals

On the spring grass.

Suppose ....

The beggar with his saddened eyes,

The iron politician (and his smile)

The schoolgirl, dreaming.

The men across the sea, behind the guns

Suppose that in a precious moment they would suddenly

Discover new-blooming wistaria,

Hanging like a flowered gown from a tree.

And giving its perfume to the night.

Then would the beggar bear the sight of his own face?

The politician reek with lies?

The schoolgirl lend her spite?

The warrior deal the death-blow?

HARRIETTE KAHRS '43

SENIOR B's

There are seniors in Room 24

Whose spirits continually soar

They think they are bright

(We can't tell it on sight)

But the rest of the seniors, they bore.

ANON.

FADS

They make red paste, tomato shade,

To draw some different lips

And all the girls who don't indulge

Are promptly labeled drips.

A red ring 'round the mouth is fine.

But anyone who'd dare

To draw a red ring 'round the nose

Would be called "Not all there!"

They put on layers of dark red paint

To accent finger nails.

Stork Club, Bravo, or Chilibean

Will make the teachers quail.

And fingernails are ornaments

Instead of things to use.

They grow long and sharp-pointed

So they can scratch and bruise.

A sweet custom, the friendship ring,

We all have them galore.

Girls wear a heavy silver band

Or two or three or four.

True friends exchange their rings one day

Next day they have a fight,

And all the rings in kingdom come

Will never set it right.

The fads that people will adopt

Are usually quite queer:

They seem so clever when they're new

Why are they drab next year?

LEAH ROSE GLASSER '43

SUNSET 1942

SONG

Blood-red against the measureless horizon

Topping purple clouds massed like distant mountains

The sun sets. All grows ominous then dark.

A war plane grim reminder of terror and death

Glides into the deepening dusk;

Shattering the stillness with deep-throated roar.

Long-smoldering hate burns pity from the hearts of men;

Will it close our eyes to the sunset?

And will those who come after us see it again

And seeing it as if for the first time

Will they call it their own discovery

And find it their assurance of continued peace?

BETTY JACKSON '42

THE GODDESS OF WISDOM

Her temples gone, her time of glory past
Here stands Athena, deity of yore,
Majestic, though a crumbling statue, cast
To be a symbol at a high school dooc.

A thousand years ago her shrines were filled
With pilgrims eager for her sacred word;
But now, ignored, her reigning power stilled.
She watches hundreds pass and stands unheard.

Perhaps, when carelessly some student jars
Her pedestal, too lightly speaks her name,
She calls a curse upon that one who mars
By lack of reverence, her ancient fame.

Or, it may be, this wisest one forgives
Reflecting that while yet a school remains.
And while one poet, artist, scholar lives
Though none acknowledge her, Athena reigns.

I have a castle
Rich and old
Where lovely thoughts
I keep.

There's evening about it
Soft and still
Where the sunset
Always sleeps

In sheets of flame,
And wells of blue,
The turrets tower high;

And lonely winds in passing

Through

Forever sigh forever sigh

Which is which? Edna "takes
off" Mr. Garrett for Kid Day
Program.

KID DAY

Each Senior Class at Tubman has its Kid Day.
an orgy of dolls, toys, and suckers. The sen-
iors come to school dressed like very small
girls. In the afternoon they go in groups to
Broad Street and to the movies. At the end
of the day, they put away childish things
forever.

Who is in the Mush Pot?
Child prodigies with cameras.

IS HE YOUR PARTNER OR YOUR VICTIM?

Your ability to make money depends upon how efficiently you operate,
and how effectively you sell your products. In these two functions your
Printer can play an important part.

Make your PRINTER feel that he is a vital part of your Organization, and
you will be assured of much greater value from your printing in many ways.

The real test of "Effective Printing" is not what it costs, but what it
Produces. And the only way to get good printing is to find a good printer
and make him your PARTNER ... not your VICTIM.
