The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was formed in 1937 with the purpose of protecting the Okefenokee Swamp. Okefenokee translates from Native American as "Land of the trembling earth," the swamp covers 438,000 acres over both Georgia and a small part of Florida, mostly lying in Georgia's Ware and Charlton Counties.
