Hartwell Dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 on the Savannah River in northern Georgia for use in the creation of hydroelectric power. In 1979 the Hartwell Lakeshore Management Plan began work to preserve the surrounding land and open the lake to the public. - Local Identifier:
