- Description:
- In this interview, Houston Prescott recalls his service in the United States Navy immediately following the end of World War II. He remembers growing up in Chicago, Illinois, and the prairie fires that were common outside of town. He describes his schooling and athletic endeavors, including playing semi-pro baseball and being approached by the Chicago Cubs in 1944. He enlisted in the Navy before learning that the war had ended and was sent to San Diego for basic training. He was assigned to the LST-1110 and describes a typhoon they encountered in the Pacific. He was on midnight watch duty one night and nearly lost the fingers of one hand when a hatch cover closed on it. He recalls the day he heard about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He describes his efforts after the war to encourage local leaders to repurpose inactivated military installations around Chicago for housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
LST-1110; Fireman 1st Class; typhoon; twin 40 guns
