- Description:
- In this interview, Bill Patterson recalls his 34-year career in the United States Air Force. He describes his family's history of military service and explains how and why he joined the Air Force. He recalls his training and an early assignment as a training supervisor of a 380-man unit. He describes his role in setting up a bi-racial committee at Dobbins Air Force Base and what he learned in his work there to improve career opportunities for people of color on the base. He recalls how he became a member and later the president of the Atlanta Chapter Tuskegee Airmen and how he got to know many of the original Tuskegee Airmen before they passed away. He explains the struggle to get a street on Dobbins Air Force Base named after the Tuskegee Airmen and describes the philanthropic work that the Atlanta Chapter of that organization performs. This interview is conducted by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Atlanta Branch.
