- Description:
- In this interview, Brian Hernan recalls his service in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He remembers his childhood in Massachusetts, including six years he spent living in an orphanage. He joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard in high school and his unit was activated the same year. He was assigned to a new Air Force aircraft and control warning unit that was sent to Iceland where they built the first radar site in that country since World War II. He describes life in Iceland; the politics of the country; their work monitoring radar; and "R & R" visits to the United Kingdom. He recalls several incidents from his duty in Iceland, including losing all power for 18 days one Christmas and having to periodically shut the radar antenna down due to exceptionally high winds. He describes his post-military education and careers and reflects on how his military service informed his life.
