- Description:
- In this interview, Glenn Smith recalls his experiences in the United States Navy before, during, and after the Vietnam War. He describes his growing up years, his family, and his reasons for enlisting in the Navy. He remembers his training, his first duty station on board the USS Zelima, and volunteering for submarine duty. He recalls his time as a Navy recruiter and volunteering for duty in Vietnam because he felt a responsibility toward his recruits who were sent there. He describes his work in a small branch office of the Navy's oceanographic service in a small village outside Saigon. He remembers many incidents during his time there, including being wounded and the death of a 19-year-old fellow sailor during an ambush by the Viet Cong. He recalls later duty on the USS Saratoga in Vietnam and lists other duty stations during his naval career. He describes his family, including his daughter's education and family. He recalls his post-military life and activities.
