- Description:
- In this interview, Harold Reaves recalls his experiences serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He describes using wooden guns during basic training, his later training as a radar technician, and transiting the Pacific Ocean in an old Merchant Marine ship. His unit provided support to the First Marine Division on Guadalcanal using truck-mounted radar equipment. He describes the types of radar they used, their methods for clearing the beaches, and his activities on Bougainville and Peleliu Islands. He recalls many incidents including "liberating" many cases of sake from a cave; experiencing a typhoon at sea; the "Zoot Suit" riots of 1943; and weeping openly when he learned that President Roosevelt died.
