- Description:
- In this interview, Leslie Spencer recalls her 20-year career in the United States Navy. She remembers her growing up years and her reasons for joining the military. She describes her duties as an aircraft electrician working in a fighter squadron; a reconnaissance squadron; and a drone squadron, in the United States and overseas. She served two tours of duty in Rota, Spain, and recalls her squadron's mission and their forward deployments to Souda Bay, Crete. She describes the hazing she experienced and witnessed as a new crew member during a time when women were first being integrated into combat and aviation maintenance roles. She recalls in detail her memories of Desert Storm and the September 11th terrorist attacks and how those events impacted her work and life. She describes immersing herself in other cultures; how she and her fellow sailors were treated by the people of other countries; and the leisure time activities and travel she experienced during her career. She recalls her final duty as a recruiter and describes her post-military education, work, and activities.
