He recalls his first active duty assignment to Afghanistan three years after the 9/11 attacks. He describes his work there in great detail, including humanitarian work with the people of Afghanistan. He recalls the death of Marine Sergeant James S. Lee just a week before their unit returned home and explains how it affected him and the unit. He describes his second overseas active duty tour to Djibouti and recalls his activities there, including working with the governments and the military of Djibouti, Kenya, South Sudan, and the Seychelles as well as humanitarian volunteer work he did with the people of Djibouti.
