- Description:
- In this interview, Jack Boone recalls his experiences in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with an artillery unit in Africa. He describes his training and voyage to Europe, including describing zig-zag maneuvers to evade German submarines. While in England, he was chosen for commando training. His unit was selected for the raid on Dieppe, but didn't go because Canadian units were selected to go. His unit was sent to North Africa and he recalls his time there, including riding a train that had to stop regularly to sweep sand off the tracks. He describes his arrival home, where an attempt was made to quarantine the soldiers, and how no soldiers paid for drinks when they arrived in New York City. At the end of the war, he was training new recruits in Louisiana, where he met his future wife and opted to leave the Army.
