- Description:
- In this interview, Hap Chandler describes his life in the Army Air Force during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War. He also outlines his father's military service in World War I as well his brother's Army service. He recalls how he got interested in aviation as a boy. On the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, he was a student at Wheaton College, where Billy Graham conducted a prayer meeting. His navigator's training took him to St. Petersburg and Miami, Florida, San Antonio and Houston, Texas. He flew both bombing and humanitarian missions over France and Germany. During Operation Market Garden, he flew supply missions for the ground troops, and describes watching the glider planes loaded with equipment arrive. Over Germany, he saw his first jet fighter plane, a German plane. He describes the reaction at the end of the war, and his trip home on the Ile de France. He arrived in New York City, took a train home to Fort McPherson, and stayed in the Ansley Hotel in Atlanta. He remained in the Air Force reserves and after finishing his education, he returned to active duty as an instructor on B-29s. He flew "tadpole" missions in Korea, and recalls that the greatest danger was from anti-aircraft fire, since the Russians had improved German radar; hence, they flew in a corkscrew path. After Korea, he flew worldwide missions, including to Kwajalein, North Africa, England, and Okinawa.
Hap Chandler was a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Forces in Europe during World War II. - Metadata URL:
