- Description:
- In this interview, Jim Dickson recalls his experiences serving in the Combat Information Center (CIC) on the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) during the Vietnam War. He recalls his upbringing in Pennsylvania and the circumstances surrounding his entry into Officer Candidate School for the Navy in Newport, Rhode Island. He describes a typhoon the ship encountered on its way to Vietnam in 1967 as well as the day to day operations of the ship on station in the Gulf of Tonkin. He recalls launching and recovering aircraft; refueling; tracking ships and planes; recreational activities on board ship; morale of the men; and the traditional “crossing the line” ceremony. He comments on the “rules of engagement” during the war and the homecoming experience for Vietnam veterans.
