- Description:
- In this interview, Allan Bullman recalls his experiences serving in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a sonarman on the USS Fessenden (DE-142), a destroyer escort. His ship protected merchant and military vessels traveling to the Mediterranean. He describes being attacked by a German torpedo bomber and recalls how his ship sank a German submarine. After Germany surrendered, his ship transited the Panama Canal and spent the rest of the war in the Pacific. He describes evacuating Japanese soldiers who were left to starve in the Marshall Islands after Japanese forces left the area. After the war he worked as a chemist for Union Carbide Corporation.
