- In this interview, Lewis Conn recalls his childhood during the Depression in Georgia, as well as his service in the United States Army in Europe during World War II. He was assigned to a tank unit and describes what it was like serving in a segregated army. Of particular interest are his recollections about German prisoners of war attending military base movie theatres that black soldiers were not permitted to enter. He describes the day to day operations of his tank unit and recalls burning German paper money in order to keep warm. He comments on the role he and his fellow soldiers played in changing American society.
