- Description:
- In this interview, T. Jackson Bedford, Jr., recalls his experiences serving as pilot in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He describes growing up in a military family; his father served as a Navy officer in both World War II and the Korean War. Bedford attended the University of Virginia on a NROTC scholarship and was commissioned in 1966. He flew EA-1F aircraft from the USS Intrepid (CV-11). His squadron's (VAQ-33) mission was to locate enemy radar and use jamming equipment and chaff to prevent it from locking on to incoming strike aircraft. He describes the day to day operations of his squadron and recalls incidents when the carrier air wing lost men. He reflects on his military experience and how it has informed his later life and career. Bedford comments on the reception Vietnam veterans received when they returned home and compares it to that experienced by post 9-11 military members today.
