- In part one of this two-part interview, J.O. "Jack" Partain describes his career in the U.S. Army during World War II. He describes his childhood, education, early career and his entry into the Army just prior to the outbreak of war. He describes Officer Candidate School and desert maneuvers. His first assignment was to an all African American unit. He was later sent to the Pacific just as the war ended in Europe and the first soldiers from Italy began arriving. He describes life in the jungles and the end of the war. He discusses the importance of training and the type of men in his unit.
