- Description:
- In this interview, Wiley Obenshain recalls his history in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After college graduation, he became a "90-day wonder" and was commissioned an Ensign on his 22nd birthday. He describes his journey to the Pacific and his experiences there, primarily escorting jeep carriers. He recalls a message received from Admiral Halsey about the Mindanao Gulf being a "bloody battleground." He relates the experience of a violent typhoon in which ships and equipment were lost. He describes hearing of President Roosevelt's death and how the nation felt about Truman. Mrs. Obenshain relates what the war years were like for her; she collected war bonds, volunteered with the Red Cross and attended Wellesley College.
