- Description:
- In this interview, Ed Knauth recalls his history in the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. He relates his life and education before the war and how he learned about the attack on Pearl Harbor. He describes his training as well as his trip to Europe. He describes in great detail many harrowing experiences during bombing runs, particularly those over the German cities of Regensburg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Schweinfurt, Bremen, Oschersleben and Berlin. He recalls that he and the other pilots knew that some Swiss citizens were "selling" downed American pilots to the Germans; crew members would prepare by bringing maps of Switzerland and phone numbers for the embassies there. He recalls contracting hepatitis and spending a month in a hospital. He remembers his 25th and final flight. He also discusses several jet aircraft and the future of military aviation.
