- In this interview, Jim Hatch recalls his career in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He relates that his interest in the military came when he earned a scholarship to a military academy as a bugler. He describes his first crossing the equator ceremony and his career path. He remembers coal-burning taxis in Japan because there was no fuel in post-war Japan. He discusses meeting his future wife and their wedding, where they used costume swords for their military wedding. He describes many incidents in his career, including searching for uranium, handball championships and sleeping on tatami mats. While living in Japan, his family lived near the Emperor's Summer Palace and employed a Japanese maid named Sumiko. He also recalls his time in Vietnam, including witnessing hundreds of bodies of Viet Cong soldiers and the bombing of his hotel. He describes communicating with his family via audio taped messages, and his homecoming. He discusses his civilian career as well as his genealogy hobb
