- Photographs taken of the U.S.S. Atlanta (CL-51) by official Naval photographers during the Battle of Midway and another unidentified operation. The images consist of aerial views of the Atlanta in formation with unidentified U.S. cruisers and aircraft carriers, as well as a close-up of the deck of the ship and it's crew.
The U.S.S. Atlanta (CL-51) was launched September 6, 1941 and joined the Pacific Fleet shortly thereafter. It was the third launching of a U.S. warship named Atlanta. The first Atlanta was an ironclad ram captured from the Confederates. The second Atlanta was a protected cruiser launched in 1884. CL-51 was commanded by Captain Samuel P. Jenkins and sponsored by Atlanta author, Margaret Mitchell. In 1942 Atlanta and its crew participated in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Solomons, and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The cruiser was sunk in November, 1942 by Japanese battleships at Guadalcanal. The fourth Atlanta was launched in 1944 and took part in Pacific operations during World War II.
