- Description:
- View of David Irenus "Red" Barron sitting with an unidentified man outside a log cabin on a farm in Georgia.
David Irenus Barron, known as the "Red Barron" played football, baseball, and ran track for Georgia Tech (Georgia Institute of Technology). In 1941 he was nearly elected to the position of Dean of Men at Georgia Tech by the board of regents, at the suggestion of Governor Eugene Talmadge. Talmadge was at this time placing people in the University system who would not try to racially integrate the colleges. The student body protested his nomination because he lacked experience and would replace Dr. M. L. Brittain, who had built up Tech's reputation over the prior 19 years. - Local Identifier:
