Governor Eugene Talmadge initiated a campaign to replace or remove public university officials who he suspected of supporting the desegregation of Georgia's public colleges and universities. This culminated in a political battle over the firing of Dr. William Cocking resulting in many Georgia colleges losing their accreditation and support from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for "gross political interference." - Local Identifier:
