A native Atlantan, Louise Suggs won several golf championships before becoming a professional in 1948. In 1949, she won the U.S. Open and became one of the founding members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). During her professional career she won fifty-eight events and was an inductee into the LPGA Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, among others. Born in West Point, Georgia, Dorothy Kirby moved to Atlanta at age 10. She won the Georgia State Women's Championship five consecutive times, the U.S. Amateur Championship, and numerous other cups, and championships. She was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1974, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 1989, and in 1971 the Atlanta Country Club established the Dorothy Kirby Invitational Tournament.
