Fort Benning is an army base located southwest of Columbus, Georgia. The base is named after Brigadier General Henry L. Benning, a Confederate general who was a resident of Columbus. Established in 1918 as Camp Benning, the facility provided basic training for units participating in World War I. as well as the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion (an all African American unit, established in 1943 an transferred to Fort Bragg in 1945) and the US 2nd Armored Division (established in 1940 and deactivated in 1991). - Local Identifier:
