- Description:
- This recording opens with an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:30, is a feature about the Townsend Prize given for Georgia's best novelist. The award was named for the former editor of Atlanta Magazine, Jim Townsend. The program features audio excerpts from columnist Celestine Sibley; author Pat Conroy; publicist George Goodwin, and author Alice Walker, who reads passages from The Color Purple. The second segment, which begins at 16:30, is a reading by Atlanta folk storyteller Chuck Larkin. The third segment, which begins at 20:22, is a sound portrait that consists of a mixture of vignettes, including people standing on a street corner in New Orleans listening to a Dixieland band; a yard full of crowing roosters in a rural area; a bluegrass band performing in Tennessee; turkeys accompanying a Dixieland band in Charleston, South Carolina; chickens feeding, and Scottish folk dancing at the Highland Games at Stone Mountain, Georgia. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
