- Description:
- This recording opens with an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:09, is a feature about the experience of Ann and Arlene Ashmore of Lanier Beach in Forsyth County, who were aboard an airplane that was hijacked in June of 1985. The program features audio excerpts of the two recounting their experience to reporters. The second segment, which begins at 16:13, is a feature about Atlanta Advocates for the Homeless, an advocacy organization that called for a bill of rights for the homeless in 1985. The group was reacting to actions of the city of Atlanta and churches who closed their doors to homeless people during the spring when temperatures reached dangerous lows for those sleeping outdoors at night. The program features audio excerpts of homeless advocate Rob Johnson and Bard Rudder; Reverend Murphy Davis and Ed Loring of Open Door Community. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
"Southwind" was a radio program about the issues, people, and culture of the South that aired on WABE-FM, Atlanta's public radio station. The series, which aired from 1980 to 1987, was conceived, produced, and reported by journalist Boyd Lewis. The creator of "Southwind" labelled two tape recordings as recording number 139. It is unclear which recording was meant to be the 139th of the series. - Local Identifier:
