Description:: This recording opens with singer Johnny Cash's rendition of "Southwind" and an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:14 is a series of truncated stories that had been previously featured on "Southwind" on the topic of voting rights for African Americans in the South. The second segment, which begins at 14:21 is a feature about Delta Airlines, and features audio excerpts of Delta spokesperson Billy Berry and union leader Ronnie Kilpatrick. The third segment, which begins at 22:55 is a feature about the 1961 Freedom Riders. The program features audio interview excerpts of unidentified students from Wisconsin and Missouri who chartered a bus to retrace the route of the original Freedom Riders who traveled throughout the South in the 1960s demonstrating against racial segregation. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
"Southwind" was a radio program about the issues, people, and culture of the South that aired on WABE-FM, Atlanta's public radio station. The series, which aired from 1980 to 1987, was conceived, produced, and reported by journalist Boyd Lewis.
