- This recording opens with singer Bessie Jones' rendition of "Preachin the Blues" and an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis and Faye McDonald Smith. The entire program is a feature about the myths and realities of southern African American women, and begins at 1:07. The story features audio of Atlanta poet Alice Lovelace, and from several other women who speak about the concerns and goals of contemporary black women. These women are Dorothy Bolden of the National Domestic Workers Council; communication specialist Vivian Edwards, Faye Bellamy, Vangie Watkins neighborhood activists, and Kareem Brown, a youth worker. The program also features commentary by author Toni Cade Bambara. The next part of the feature features how African American women are making political inroads in Pickens County, Alabama. This part features audio from activists Maggie Bozeman and Julie Wilder, and Mullins, Alabama Mayor Geraldine Sawyer. The final segment of the program features commentary by author Pearl Lomax. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
