- Description:
- This recording opens with singer Johnny Cash's rendition of "Southwind" and an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:15, is a feature about the tradition of Sacred Harp singing in the South. The program includes audio excerpts of composer and producer Alice Parker, who is interviewed by author Carolyn Becknall Mann. The second segment, which begins at 12:57, is a feature about the 2,000 mile civil rights "march" from Montgomery, Alabama, to Washington D.C. in protest of racial injustice, the economic policies of the Reagan administration, and to put pressure on Congress to pass a renewal of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The program features audio excerpts from Southern Christian Leadership Council President Joseph Lowery, and activists Maggie Bozeman and Julia Wilder who had been convicted in Alabama of violating voting laws in that state. The third segment, which begins at 19:28, is a feature about the fire ant problem in the south. The program features an interview of author Lewis Regenstein. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis.
