A parade was held in September, 1990 following Atlanta’s selection by the International Olympic Committee to host the 1996 Olympic Games. The ticker-tape parade featured Mayor Maynard Jackson and other dignitaries with an estimated fifty thousand people in attendance. Atlanta Public Schools excused children with parental approval to attend the parade. Atlanta won the Olympic bid over Athens, Greece after an expensive campaign led by former mayor Andrew Young. - Local Identifier:
