Cumberland Island is located on the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Georgia near the town of St. Marys. Originally inhabited by Timucuan Indians, the island fell under Spanish control and eventually private ownership. Prior to the islands National Park status in 1971 the Carnegie family primarily owned the island. Little Cumberland Island is still private land and is not open to the public. - Local Identifier:
