The John Burrison Georgia Folklore Archive recordings contains unedited versions of all interviews. Some material may contain descriptions of violence, offensive language, or negative stereotypes reflecting the culture or language of a particular period or place. There are instances of racist language and description, particularly in regards to African Americans. These items are presented as part of the historical record. This project is a repository for the stories, accounts, and memories of those who chose to share their experiences for educational purposes. This recording starts with Claude Terry telling several humorous stories about kayakers breaking their boats and getting stranded on various rivers in the South. Then at 13:44, Jack Hart shares a story about caving in a deep pit in Alabama. At 26:51 Frank Jernigan follows with a story about an inexperienced kayaker jumping in the water to rescue a paddle and one about camping next to a railroad in Charleston, West Virginia. At 35:45 he tells several stories about leading canoeing and raft trips such as when a student accidentally broke Harts kayak on the Chattooga River in Georgia, and when inexperienced students canoed on the Nantahala River in North Carolina. Jernigan ends his interview at 53:21 by recalling Bruce Abernathy jumping out of a tandem canoe on the Chattooga River. Next, at 1:08:20, Susan Knappenberger remembers when a friend almost died when rafting on the Chattooga River. At 1:12:22, John Houser describes canoeing with Abernathy and when Jernigans van broke down. At 1:17:17, Abernathy concludes by sharing a story about a disagreement during a tandem canoeing race on the Nantahala River.
