The John Burrison Georgia Folklore Archive recordings contains unedited versions of all interviews. Some material may contain descriptions of violence, offensive language, or negative stereotypes reflecting the culture or language of a particular period or place. There are instances of racist language and description, particularly in regards to African Americans. These items are presented as part of the historical record. This project is a repository for the stories, accounts, and memories of those who chose to share their experiences for educational purposes. This recording begins with Vivian Lewis describing a Norwegian legend about children who care for a tree and thereby earn gifts from elfs, as well as a Norwegian game where families compete to build a fire with the highest smoke stack to earn the title King of the Mountain. Then at 3:34, John Potts recalls two supposedly true legends: one about the ghosts of beheaded prisoners and the other about a boy who becomes a hero after killing Russian soldiers during the Winter War. At 11:00, Lewis remembers studying at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, and specifically discusses the schools namesake, Saint Olaf; Founders Day; and a folk dance. Then, she sings a section of a song about a woman who climbs a mountain to churn butter. At 16:11, Lewis and Potts discuss lingonberries and lefse, a dish traditionally eaten at Christmas, and share stories about the Yule nisse, a Christmas elf, and the importance of Christmas Eve in Scandinavian culture. Next, at 21:15, Potts shares the legend of how Norway banished snakes from their country. At 23:27, Alice Norton tells part of a legend in which a fox marries a witch. Then at 25:55, Potts describes Easter and Long Friday traditions such as burning large hay piles, putting sleds on roofs, and stuffing sacks of hay down chimneys. To conclude the record, he recalls the mythical origin of Trollhttan, a city named after the winding, snake-like formation of fog over Lake Vanern. John Hilding Potts (approximately 1918-2004) was born in Waukegan, Illinois, to John Potts and Aina A. West. His family moved to Colorado where he lived until he was 14. Afterwards, he and his father moved to Finland, where he stayed until he was 20. He married and had two daughters, two step-daughters, and one step-son. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve and worked for Deltas quality control division for thirty-one years before retiring in 1983. Vivian Lewis was raised in Porter, Minnesota. She graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in Home Economics and taught until her marriage to Paul Lewis. They later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and had three sons. Alice Sofia Berg Morton (1909-2003) was born in Porter, Minnesota, to Christian A. and Emma Paulson Berg. In 1931, she graduated from St. Olaf College and subsequently taught English. She married John D. Morton (?-2000), and they had three daughters. She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens, Georgia, where she served in several positions. for J"olklol'e JO] Prof. John flurrison 'J1ah Lt.J of' Con tun l,:::; Jnl'ormunts und their addresRes ft'olklorn 1Prarn::.cri.p L 1ur 1l'1et~ Kirw oJ' Uv: noun Lim1 .flcb:--:adt~d 7/ond I,-_, n11 t, tons Olli t-: nnd Uv; i1H L Lc-r 'lhe Yoloni '.lf:in 'lhc: ;:)nake Ohant 'lhe flabbl t and tile l'ox J1:tH.> lBr fl'oolc: r_y t~vi] t)pl ri "I-, 'Jt>wr: '/ :)~l'"(BB rs.. f1e?!] s lir .. l\)i:Lt1 Hru. lct"":wis u ru,, l,n'/:i H J-,lrs., Norton f'.ir~ i)ott.;) Lfr ~ Po L tn ~fy Collec Li.nr: H'Kpe:rience f'or l'olkLH]crn. f, t lea::;t J J{r;ew whnee t co11Jd !'hid 2. r1 (:1 r,-;c:1_hw of fo.l.k trndi.t,ion. i,.1ntorr:1lly [ thoucJ1t :-rnch ad ,c:,p rHHpt-:ct for folk c11Jtnr-e t'Joulrl o:o hanrl-i.n--hHnd \'ri.lh a i,::i_J;J tel1 i_rH~ pr-ar:tir::o of t,hAL folk \\hen T mot m.v husl1ctnrl'n rnrn1.ly, I reali7,nd ri.:,:}'1L ;-iwiiy how prond ldn wotht'.r was of her Nor1~10fzi.~rn buc:k:ro1.md. ;;ti.i::.: made ler~,H, <J potc1 Lo hread, on HW ~iocond i:.llt to he:r hon1_) ... /\t ChriHtmnu,hc ,;;oHld rnli;bJ the \!or'.'.'t)p)~-1n cur;Lum::,. :;l1i::: pr;:icLi.cnd ;1::; a a-Lrl in i;;'irn1eLHYLLlt /.-1.Lhow;h r krn-J w she wns kno11l0,rl,~e ab 1;; in Norwevi an he ri tap;o, l li<1d novu ,, f\ U(.: :.d.-LonzHl bQr on Nora 111,ytJrn.l(v,;y 01 L').,-~nndry .. Professor John Burrison founded the Atlanta Folklore Archive Project in 1967 at Georgia State University. He trained undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in his folklore curriculum to conduct oral history interviews. Students interviewed men, women, and children of various demographics in Georgia and across the southeast on crafts, storytelling, music, religion, rural life, and traditions. As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information, which places us inaposition to choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, andbias isreflected in our descriptions, whichmay not convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materialsaccurately.Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. We often re-use language used by the former owners and creators, which provides context but also includes bias and prejudices of the time it was created.Additionally, our work to use reparative languagewhereLibrary of Congress subject termsareinaccurate and obsolete isongoing. Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions. If you encounter harmful, offensive, or insensitive terminology or description please let us know by emailingreference@atlantahistorycenter.com.
