In this recording Laurie Suber, Mary Henderson, and Marion Toler reminisce about growing up in Americus, Georgia. The interview begins with the three women providing biographical information. Then at 2:10, they reflect on their time attending Pleasant Grove School, including traveling to school in covered wagons. Next at 6:27, they recall Clare Mackeller, their teacher, who later became a professor at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. At 10:19, they describe clothes they wore, which they washed once a week. Next at 12:28, they remember recreational activities such as singing and square dancing, and reflect on courting rituals. At 16:53, the women recall the sugar cane mill their family owned and transporting sugar cane with wagons and mules. Next at 23:40, they argue that it is now much easier to buy wedding gifts because of registries, and that in the past it was common for newly married couples to live with their parents. Then at 26:11, they recall their grandfather, who was a doctor, tending patients with chronic illnesses at home because there wasnt a local hospital. The interview ends with the women discussing how most people didnt buy groceries because they grew what they needed on their farms. Laurie Suber (1894-1979) was born in Americus, Georgia, to Linnie J Hargrove (1871-1963) and Stonewall Jackson Hargrove (1864-1944). She married George P. Suber (1889-1950) and died in Cobb County, Georgia. Mary Henderson (1896-1977) was born in Americus. She married William Wendell Henderson in 1912 and died in Americus. Marion Toler (1899-1993) was born in Americus to Linnie J. Hargrove (1871-1963) and Stonewall Jackson Hargrove (1864-1944). She married Douglas Toler, and they had three children: Dorothy Hodges (1922-2017), Douglas Marion Toler (1924-1926), and Betty T Hall (1928-?). She died in Americus. Professor John Burrison founded the Atlanta Folklore Archive Project in 1967 at Georgia State University. He trained undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in his folklore curriculum to conduct oral history interviews. Students interviewed men, women, and children of various demographics in Georgia and across the southeast on crafts, storytelling, music, religion, rural life, and traditions.
