Nancy Foote interview with Elias Moore and Jerry Cox (part one)

This is the first of a three part recording; audio is very low and difficult to hear, and the description is based on the transcript of Jerry Lee Coxs interview. The interview starts with Cox discussing the "Griffin Light," that chased people in its search for a deceased man's riches. Cox theorizes that many locals believed in the supernatural because there was not much to do, and that most of their stories, except those told by his grandfather, were exaggerated. Cox repeats a story told by his grandfather in which he was traveling to visit his sister, who lived several days away. On his way, he saw his sister on the side of the road, so they traveled the remaining journey together. Once they arrived, he was told that his sister had passed away a day earlier. Changing topics, Cox explains animal intuition, specifically a Duke University study on their ability to feel death approaching. As an example, he tells a story about when a week before his father's death, their dog, Beast, did not leave the house. After his fathers death, Beast never re-entered the house, and on the second anniversary of his death, Beast died. Cox finishes the interview by discussing a superstition about how Seventh Sons are born with healing and magical powers, such as removing warts, touching fire, or the ability to stop bleeding. Elias Moore (1912-1994) was born in Douglas, Georgia, to Margaret Vickers Moore (1876-1918) and James Aaron Moore (1853-1923). On October 15, 1938, Moore married Rhonda Fussell Moore, and they had one child, Margaret Rose Moore Boone (1939-2017). John Jerry Cox (1927-2015) was born rural Broxton, Coffee County, Georgia to George Cox (1899-1986) and Mary Ann (1904-1994). He graduated from the University of Georgia, received a business degree in accounting, and worked as the Payroll Supervisor in the Controllers Office at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He married Helen Buchanan (1932-2015) and they had two children, including Benjamin Joshua Cox (1959-1959).
