Laree Morgan interview with Lillie Lea, Ola Christmas, Lizzie Peavy, Nancy Williams, Gussie Lango, Genus Woodard, and Sarah Morgan (part two)

The John Burrison Georgia Folklore Archive recordings contains unedited versions of all interviews. Some material may contain descriptions of violence, offensive language, or negative stereotypes reflecting the culture or language of a particular period or place. There are instances of racist language and description, particularly in regards to African Americans. These items are presented as part of the historical record. This project is a repository for the stories, accounts, and memories of those who chose to share their experiences for educational purposes. The viewpoints expressed in this project do not necessarily represent the viewpoints of the Atlanta History Center or any of its officers, agents, employees, or volunteers. This is the second of a two part interview, the audio starts in the middle of Nancy Williamss interview. She lists traditional health remedies and tells the legend of Soap Sally. At minute 2:50, Laree Morgan talks with two African Americans, Genus Woodard and Gussie Lango, who had previously worked for her in-laws. Next Genus Woodard tells a joke about free air for tires. At minute 3:35, Gussie Lango explains that they use the word haints rather than ghosts. Then Woodard tells a joke about a ghost and recollects when his wife caught him cheating. At minute 5:58, Lango recounts two ghost stories involving her family. Afterwards, she narrates a story about an old man who encountered cursing boys and finishes with a story about an incident in which a White man caught African Americans stealing. 10:11: Sarah Morgan, Laree Morgans mother-in-law, remembers school games she played called Haga and Stealing Sticks. She then sings two songs, an African American song she sang to her children as a lullaby, and a party game song. At minute 14:35, she recalls a traditional African American remedy for newborns that was used on her brother. Then, she discusses early 1900s death practices. At the conclusion of the recording, she describes additional traditional African American cures. The recording also includes songs from 1920s records: [21:22] The Roving Gambler by Tobe Little, [24:07] Stone Mountain Memorial by Tobe Little, [27:29] Aint you Coming Out Tonight by Vernon Dalhart, [30:33] The Prisoners Song by Vernon Dalhart, and [33:40] Bootleggers Daughter by Kaufman-Campbell.

THE HOOLPOLK CAS":: Thomas G. 1'!001fol1{ HaS accused of the murder in IBCr7(August 6, 1887) of eight members of his (father's) family and one visitor. He Has first tried before Judge Gustin with Col. Rutherford chief defense lawyer and J.L. Hardeman prosecuting for the State. Col. Rutherford's summation and appeal to the jury lasted tHelve hours and was considered the most brilliant fiefense ever heard in Georgia. (1888) The Sunreme Court ordered a ne\ol trial, which ,1;asheld in March, 1889. This resulted in mistrial. ~ change of venue to Houston Gounty was ordered. The third trial started June 3rd with Solicitor ~elton assisting Hardeman and others in the prosecution. This trial also broke down, and a nAW one was started. \loolfol1{ Has sentenced to be hanged on August 16th. The case was again appealed to the Supremem Court of Georg;a in June, 1@90 (1890). On October 7th Judge Gober, acting for Judge hiller, resentenced him. He was 'finally hanged in Pe~ry (and buried in Hawkinsville although his grave in Rose Hill Cemetary would have been the lOth in his family's plot. It was his Dwn request that he not be buried in Macon and was further concerned that his body would be moved by train. His brother-in-law, from Hmlkinsville, af'ranged for the hurse to take his body, directly from the scaffold to the grave in the Hawkinsville cemetary!') Nearly ten years later (frem the date of the murder, not the trial o:~ hanging) a negro crirninal, Simon Cooper, was lynched in South Carolina; in his memorandum booR was found this note: "Tom 'doolfolk W3S mighty slick, but I fixed him. I would have killed, him with the rest of the damn family, but he was not at home." (That last quote is footnoted in the book number 21, to The Nacon . Woolfolk Jr., Susan Pearl Woolfolk, Annie Woolfolk, Rosebud Woolfolk, Charles RowBnd Woolfolk, Eattie Woolfolk and Mrs. Temperence West, Mrs. Woolfolk's aunt. The Woolfolk hone was on the old Culloden Road about 12 miles from Nacon. Thomas Hoolfolk ,I8S about 27 at the xli time o.f the crime. A coroner's jury was formed at the scene, almese as soon as enough neighbors had gathered, and testimony was heard. HIS STORY OF '1'T-'E CRH1E "Thomas said as near as be could think it must have been about two hours before day "hen' he 'was lying: on his bed in front of the window ,1hicr: '-las open and heard so;neone strike h's father." Dick ran into the ro~m and Tom heard him fall, then jupped out the window. He went for hel~ at the home of ~reen Lockett (about 500 yards from his own home) a'Negro. The reason he had blood h~ on himself and his clothes was that while "aiting for Someone to COEe he had rAised his mother back on her own bed. She was lying partially ofi the floor. Bloo~ on his feet he said, was from standing near the bloody palcBs: by his mother, in his sister's room etc. Other testimony was heRrd from Green Lockett t,'lice, Anderson Jones (colored), Loanana (Luana) Cooper (colored), Emma Jones (colored), ':I.E. Smith, ThQInas G. Hoolfolk (note again change of middle initial), John O,lens (colored), R.H. vfright, and Samuel Chanbliss. Cooper Testimony included for "folkish" contnet and because \le can't prove from these stories that SelS ,Jas niI'! in no ,,!ay related to the afore mentioned Simon Cooper. The CO\-JS were bello1-d.ng 2nd~the dogs barking." Tom was married to Mrs. Georgia Woolfolk, but they apparently did not live together because "she didn't like to have Tom around the house because there Has no friendly felling between them." Evidently his father had tJ;}ed to set Tom up in business several times, but Tom was too lazy to make a go of it. "All the family Q'lnA.QY'An T.f"\ ,;;-i.<:::r-oprl rr ......m 11 The Hacon Telegra8h, August 8, 1887, page 1 primarily this is a discription of the funeral and is important only because of the overwhelming crowd that attended an,l that nublic sentiment was HOT for an immediate trial and conviction. Tom was in prison in Facon. The judge for the circuit Has out of state and general LEGAL opinion was tnat the trial wnuld wait "in the best interests of justice" until tempers '",ere not so volitlle and true Pgcts could be brought out with less prejudice. Tom also spent sorre ti"1e in the Fulton County jail for fear of lynch mobs in Yacon nnd the surrounding areas. Col. Rutherford was Col. Atlanta, Georgia 30329 Dear Mrs. Morgan: . Thank y01.1 so lTuch for the copy of the song about Tom Woolfolk. Now that I have the words I'll chat with my grandmother and others of ger generation and see if we can come up with a tune. I am delighted with itL I will send you a copy of the books that were in the bibliography for the paper I wrote on supertitions since I doubt that the people involved would be of much help to you. They are mostly in I'lacen and Americus, but the books should be available in any library. As to my study of witchcraft, that was entirely on tane and the copy I kept has now been turned over to Dr. Louis Jnnes of the American Studies department of the University of New York. He is vastly inter~sted in witches and when I found that I wasn't going to be able to be with him in graduate studies I just gaVe him the tape. As I recall, I began by engaging a lovely old colored woman in a conversation directly plagerized from Tom Sawyer about the witch incident in the first chapter. She came throllgh with selferal stories of her own concerning being "ridden by the witches" and deviated into ghost stories and some superstiti~ns. Ny greates 'darry "lith the t aping was to be Sllre my SUbjects undersood the process and weren't afraid of the machine. In general, 1[,ay I sUl3gest these several bool{s for "in the meantime" as I copy the other biblioC1raphy for you: any of Mark Twain's books but especially Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn; The Golden Bough; Ghosts in American Houses by Joshua Reynolds; The Treasury of American (and the Treasury of Sout1:lern) Folklore; Uncle Remus Stories. There are a number of paperback books 'dith rather discolJraging looking cov~rs which are really fine sources. Dr. Leah Strong, head of the American Studies Department at WesleyanColle~e and my advisor, may be of some help to you as maj Dr. Jones himself. Dr. Strong can give you his address since that is one ,f the many things around my house I can only find when I'm not looking for it. I am still quite anxiollS to see' a copy of your final paper and 'again .1 thank yo" for the copy of your song. I mention, too that I have given you Kark Twain as a reference for his quot8tion that "any mummery is a good one as long 8S the peo~le believe," which is to be found in his Conn. Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Dr. Stron~ firmly believes that this is the basis of all sunerstition and it i~ a handy phrase for summatirn or something~ Best of luclz- in your search for the author of the ',-!oolfolk ballad Bnd I will mail the biblio~raphy BS soon as I can mBke a copy for you. YOul's truly, ~u ~-Za2-Cketo I ~p Cl!v~i-&(/ l~'U<-:, BROADWAY AND R I V E R SID 0 ,R I V E MACON, GA. 312GB April 5, 1968 Mrs. A.F. Morgan 2408 Wood Acres Rd., N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30329 Dear Mrs. Morgan: May I reccommend another book with reference to the Woolfolk murder, but also containing information about other Georgian folklore. It is the '1'oombs Oak, byE. Merton Coulter. The account of the murder is quite good, giving more insight into Tom's family life both at home and with his wife,Georgia . The Toombs Oa',( is another lovely story as is the one about the Tree "Thich O.med Itself. The book is probably in the Georgia State Library--I got it from the Wesleyan one. As for the bibliography, I seem to have mentioned all the books I used in my other letter. Most of my sources were interviews with one exception--I used class notes taken in a sociology course given during a S'lmmer seminar at the University of Oregon. This partained primarily to the classes and types of people ',ho are most likely to be superstitious and theoopsychology behind the origin of superstition in general. I think this can be found in almost any sociology book, perhans an introductory one, or occasionally it cr00S up in criminology notes. The gist of the thing was that lower classes or poverty stricken types tend to grasp at any ray of hope and therefore cling to the old sUDerstitions. It isn't g matter of tradition or heritage, to them. It is an instilled ~art of life and deviation is wrong or bad. Froro1 this then it is obvious that ,superstition starts Hith the thoLwht that "I can control this en~ironment if .. ", the key bein~ if. And too, the imagination is in charge cf the situation. The Go-lden Bou['h Hill offer an excellent account of tho "Year [ling Drams" and is .Jorth going i.nto i.f you Hant to lean your parer in this direc:tion. I also took -that from class notes. Aside from the notes and the books already mentioned, the one most helpful writ~en source was the Treasury of Southern Folk Lore, and the Grier's Almanac. This latter is one of t'0.e questionable SO'lrces I mentioned before. It looks ghastly and isn't very easy to find, but try a drngstore. It has superior information on Dog Days, Astrology, and the aged use of herbs. If you can't find the book, let me know and I'll send you a copy of the information from my paper. I can't even find my olm C0py or I'd s end you tha tone. Oh yes, there is a fairly new book out called ~romina~! American Ghosts, by Suzie Smith, but for the most part it is neither as colorful nor as pleasant reading as Joshua Reynolds similar text, Ghosts in American Rou~. I'm sure you hate for people to tell you how to write your papers, but I am excited about thi s one. I will try to stay ;u~ of your Hay. Ch, but before I close, Hal Boyle's syndicated column in the newspsner occasionally closes with a superstition or "old saying" an~ ~his might be a source for padding if you need it. Best of luck cn the paper! Yours trUly, Hildred Spear P.S. I really don't have a mind at all! I found several things in t~e other papers ;>arta-:ning to tGe song anS the Toombs OaK book gives another account of the song altogether. Anyway, Tom actually did ask to have the gallo'"s .Jhitewashed. He said he didn't like the look of it. And during the first trial (Dec. 6-16, 1?87) Gal. autherford drank "from a blue hottle. Blue was a prohibition color." This is from the Dec. 14 Macen Telegra~h, page 5. G.Jen is looking for the 1898 account of the lynching of Shoon Cooper. I nhoned her to be Sure she would zet right to it. She hasn't h~d any lUCK yet, but will keep at it. Col. Rutherford implyed in his summation during the first trial, that a band of NeQros did the deed(s) but testimonY to this effect was ruled heresav and therefore inadmssabl~. A Mr. S.S. Pennine;ton testified at tl'e second trial that John Jeff, a Negro, had told him that Heolrolk wouldn't pay him for 8hoppi. ng cotton and he "II,S "going to kill hi and everyone of that name. 11 Al so, a secon'~, "<'egro, ".h ose name eScapes rne at the moment, was employed tc ,'Ihite\'Bsh the Ho01folk house sbortly before the murders, and told Tom he miQht be Daintin" it 'Jhite then but It . ,-, - ~.> I'll paint it red before long," Capt. Professor John Burrison founded the Atlanta Folklore Archive Project in 1967 at Georgia State University. He trained undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in his folklore curriculum to conduct oral history interviews. Students interviewed men, women, and children of various demographics in Georgia and across the southeast on crafts, storytelling, music, religion, rural life, and traditions.
As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information, which places us inaposition to choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, andbias isreflected in our descriptions, whichmay not convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materialsaccurately.Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. We often re-use language used by the former owners and creators, which provides context but also includes bias and prejudices of the time it was created.Additionally, our work to use reparative languagewhereLibrary of Congress subject termsareinaccurate and obsolete isongoing. Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions.
