Clark College was founded in 1869 by the Freedmen's Aid Society and the Methodist Episcopal Church as a predominantly African American College in southern Atlanta, Georgia. The college is named after Bishop Davis Clark, first president of the Freedmen's Aid Society, and was chartered as Clark University in 1877.
