Augustus Freeman "Gus" Hawkins (1907-2007) was a politician, civil rights activist, and organized labor advocate. A Democrat, Hawkins served in the United States House of Representatives from 1963 to 1991. He was the first African American to represent California in the United States Congress, where he co-sponsored the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment Act. He was also a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. - Local Identifier:
