Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr. (1938-2003) was elected as the first African American mayor of Atlanta, Georgia in 1974. The grandson of prominent activist John Wesley Dobbs (1882-1961), he served three terms, two from 1974-1982 and another from 1990-1994. During his time in office he helped to remodel Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, which was renamed as Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after his death in 2003. - External Identifiers:
