Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (1924-2005) was the first African American woman elected to Congress; she represented New York's 12th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she became the first African American to run for President as a major-party candidate and was the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. - Metadata URL:
