Howard Baugh, Sr. (1924-2007) was an Atlanta police officer who joined the force in 1952, just four years after the city had hired its first eight African American police officers. In 1955, Baugh became the first black officer to make detective. He subsequently became the first African American on the force promoted to sergeant, lieutenant and captain. He ultimately became the first black assistant chief of the Department. - Local Identifier:
